KARACHI: The Hyderabad Kingsmen secured a vital six-wicket victory over Islamabad United in Match 21 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 at the National Stadium. Guided by a captain’s knock from Marnus Labuschagne and a strong bowling performance by debutant Asif Mehmood, the Kingsmen chased down a target of 154 with 11 balls to spare.
The win marks a significant turnaround for the Hyderabad franchise, securing back-to-back victories and moving them off the bottom of the tournament standings.
The match began with Hyderabad winning the toss and electing to bowl, a decision that initially seemed challenged by Islamabad’s aggressive top order. Devon Conway led the charge for United, scoring a fluent 45 off 31 deliveries, including seven boundaries. Alongside Sameer Minhas, who contributed 22 runs, Islamabad reached 56/1 during the powerplay.
However, the Kingsmen’s bowling unit, led by Mohammad Ali, began to apply pressure in the middle overs. Ali finished with efficient figures of 2/21, while Glenn Maxwell provided crucial containment, conceding only 21 runs in his three-over spell.
The defining moment of the Islamabad innings occurred in the final over, delivered by the 30-year-old debutant Asif Mehmood. Islamabad appeared poised for a total exceeding 165, with Mark Chapman batting on 42. In a stunning display of death bowling, Mehmood claimed four wickets in the space of six balls, dismissing Chapman, Imad Wasim, Mehran Mumtaz, and Chris Green. This unprecedented collapse saw Islamabad limited to just three runs in the 20th over, ending their innings at 153/9.
Hyderabad’s pursuit of 154 started with intent as Maaz Sadaqat struck a rapid 30 off 16 balls, ensuring the required rate remained manageable from the outset. Despite the loss of Sadaqat and Usman Khan, captain Marnus Labuschagne anchored the chase with composure. Labuschagne remained unbeaten on 61 from 53 deliveries, striking six boundaries. He found a reliable partner in Saim Ayub, who contributed a brisk 35 off 26 balls. Their partnership effectively neutralized Islamabad’s spin threat, led by Imad Wasim and Chris Green, who took 2/19.
The chase was finalized in the 19th over when Labuschagne and Irfan Glenn Maxwell steered the side past the finish line. Islamabad’s bowling attack struggled to find breakthroughs during the middle phase of the second innings, with Faheem Ashraf’s two wickets proving insufficient to derail the Kingsmen's momentum.
The result leaves Islamabad United in a precarious position despite their third-place standing, as they have now struggled with middle-order consistency in consecutive fixtures.
