DHARAMSALA: Virat Guides RCB to Play-offs as Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer delivered crucial half-centuries in IPL 2026 to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure a 23-run win over Punjab Kings on Sunday.
The victory in Dharamsala confirmed Bengaluru’s place in the play-offs, making them the first team to qualify for the knockout stage this season. Punjab, meanwhile, suffered another setback in their campaign after falling short in a chase of 223.
After being sent in to bat, Bengaluru recovered from an early wicket through a steady partnership between Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. Kohli struck 58 from 37 deliveries and controlled the middle phase before being dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal.
Padikkal added 45, while Iyer shifted the momentum further in the final overs with an unbeaten 73. Tim David also chipped in with a quick cameo as Bengaluru finished on 222 for 4.
Kohli’s innings marked his fourth half-century of the season and continued a productive run after his century in the previous fixture.
Punjab’s pursuit never settled after Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed both openers inside the powerplay. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh departed cheaply, while captain Shreyas Iyer failed to build an innings.
Useful contributions from Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge kept Punjab in contention briefly, but regular wickets prevented the chase from gaining consistency.
A late stand between Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh added some pressure on Bengaluru’s bowlers. Shashank made 56, while Stoinis scored 37, but the required rate continued to rise.
Rasikh Salam finished with figures of 3 for 36 and struck twice in the final over to seal Bengaluru’s ninth victory in 13 matches.
The result strengthened Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s position at the top of the table, while Punjab Kings were left needing favourable results to remain in the race for the play-offs.
