Sikandar Raza's 68 In Vain as Zimbabwe Bowled Out for 169 in UAE ODI Tri-Series Final

SHARJAH: A masterclass in disciplined bowling and exceptional fielding saw Afghanistan take comprehensive control of the UAE ODI Tri-Series Final, reducing Zimbabwe to a total of 169 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Chevrons suffered a devastating early collapse against a relentless Afghan attack, which consistently extracted sharp turn and variable bounce from the surface.

Afghanistan’s opening bowling pairs immediately dictated terms, making significant inroads during the mandatory powerplay where Zimbabwe slumped to a shaky 37 for 3. The pace duo of Fazalhaq Farooqi (2/41) and Bilal Sami (2/27) hit immaculate lengths, generating testing movement that consistently breached the opposition’s top order.

The introduction of veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi further choked the scoring rate, as his masterful spell of 2 for 25 left Zimbabwe’s middle order with very few scoring opportunities.

Amidst a flurry of falling wickets, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza stood tall to anchor the innings.

Shrugging off the loss of early partners, Raza played a lone hand of immense grit and precision. He paced his innings expertly, bringing up a vital half-century off 64 deliveries. The veteran finished with a brilliant 68 off 83 balls, a lone counter-offensive punctuated by three boundaries and three massive sixes that single-handedly pushed his team towards respectability.

Raza found fleeting support from Ryan Burl, who contributed a steady 31 off 45 deliveries, forming a crucial 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

However, any hopes of a substantial total were comprehensively extinguished once Rashid Khan found his rhythm. The premier leg-spinner took control of the back end of the innings, ripping through the lower-middle order with a superb haul of 3 for 41 in his 10 overs.

Supported by sharp catching in the outfield, Afghanistan cleanly polished off the tail. In the 44th over, Bilal Sami trapped Wellington Masakadza leg-before-wicket for 8, ensuring Zimbabwe bowled out for 169 in 43.3 overs.

With a target of 170 on the board, Afghanistan enters the run chase as strong favorites to lift the Tri-Series championship trophy on a pitch expected to favor their technical batting unit.
