AFG vs ZIM Final: Farooqi and Omarzai Blitz Leaves Zimbabwe Reeling at 37/3

AFG vs ZIM Final: Farooqi and Omarzai Blitz Leaves Zimbabwe Reeling at 37/3

SHARJAH: A relentless opening bowling display from Afghanistan has left Zimbabwe reeling at 37/3 after the mandatory 10-over powerplay in the high-stakes UAE ODI Tri-Series final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, the Chevrons’ top order completely collapsed under severe pressure from pace duo Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai, handing Afghanistan absolute command of the championship decider early on.

The early momentum shifted decisively towards the Afghans in the fifth over when the first breakthrough was made with the score at 22. Left-arm speedster Fazalhaq Farooqi struck the opening blow at precisely 4.2 overs, cleaning up opener Tadiwanashe Marumani (12 off 11 balls) to break a cautious opening stand.

From that point, Zimbabwe struggles in powerplay overs intensified dramatically as the runs dried up against tight lines. Farooqi struck again shortly after to dismiss Tafadzwa Tsiga (4), before Azmatullah Omarzai joined the party from the other end, extracting subtle movement to remove opener Brian Bennett (9) and leave the Zimbabwean top order in absolute tatters.

At the end of AFG vs ZIM powerplay, Zimbabwe is on 37/3. The daunting task of rebuilding the innings in this grand final now rests entirely on the shoulders of the veteran pair currently anchoring the crease: Brendan Taylor and captain Sikandar Raza.
