Spencer Johnson Replaces Nathan Ellis as CSK Bolster Pace Attack for IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured pacer Nathan Ellis ahead of IPL 2026. Ellis has been ruled out of the tournament after aggravating a hamstring injury earlier this month, forcing the franchise to look for a replacement in their fast-bowling unit.
Johnson joins the squad for INR 1.5 crore and returns to the IPL after previously representing multiple franchises in earlier seasons. The 30-year-old has played limited international cricket for Australia but has experience in T20 leagues and domestic competitions.
Johnson Returns to IPL Setup
Johnson has previously featured in the IPL with Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders. He was picked up for a high price during the 2024 auction but had limited opportunities across the two seasons and later went unsold at the 2026 auction before being signed as a replacement.
The left-arm pacer has played more than 70 T20 matches in his career and adds variety to the Chennai Super Kings pace attack. His inclusion strengthens the overseas fast-bowling options in the squad.
CSK Pace Attack Options
With Johnson joining the squad, Chennai Super Kings now have several pace options available for the season. Overseas fast bowlers include Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, and Zak Foulkes, while Indian seam options include Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, and others in the pace department.
The team management is expected to rotate fast bowlers depending on conditions during IPL 2026 as they prepare for another title challenge.
