Matt Henry Granted Paternal Leave as New Zealand Eye Semi-Final Spot

Matt Henry Granted Paternal Leave as New Zealand Eye Semi-Final Spot

New Zealand is currently facing England in their second Super 8 fixture at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With three points from their previous matches in this stage, a victory would secure a top position in the group and confirm their place in the World Cup semi-final.

However, even a defeat would not automatically end their hopes. In that scenario, qualification could come down to Net Run Rate, particularly in comparison to Pakistan. Pakistan has earned one point from their last two games and can reach a maximum of four points if they win their final match. This keeps the race open heading into the final round of fixtures.

Henry Set To Return Home

Amid the intense qualification battle, New Zealand has confirmed that Matt Henry will leave the squad after the England clash to be with his wife, Holly, as they await the birth of their second child.

Head coach Rob Walter addressed the situation and shared, "Firstly, we’re all very excited for Matt and Holly on the arrival of their second child. It’s a very significant moment for their family and we’re wishing them all the best. There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge but we’re hopeful that the stars align for the team and for Matt and that we’ll see him back competing in the final phases of the competition."

The team has not named a replacement, expressing confidence that Henry could rejoin the squad if New Zealand advances to the semi-finals.

Key Contributor With The Ball

Henry has played a vital role in New Zealand’s campaign so far. In five matches, he has taken six wickets at an average of 22.17 while maintaining an economy rate of 7.39. His consistency with the new ball and in the middle overs has added balance to the Blackcaps’ bowling unit.

As New Zealand awaits clarity on their semi-final fate, the squad will be hoping both their campaign and Matt Henry return align perfectly in the coming days.
