Shanto calls for Unity and Consistency in Bangladesh’s ODI Rebuild

Shanto calls for Unity and Consistency in Bangladesh’s ODI Rebuild

Bangladesh’s return to international cricket this week carries a deeper significance than just another bilateral assignment. After months of uncertainty and the disappointment of missing the T20 World Cup earlier this year, the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan marks the beginning of what Najmul Hossain Shanto hopes will be a long-term rebuilding phase for the national side.

The Bangladesh batter believes the team must now channel its energy toward a bigger objective, qualifying for and competing strongly at the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“It is definitely going to be a new start,” Shanto said. “Whichever way you see it, our goal is to ultimately reach the 2027 World Cup. If we can progress together with each other, as a team, I think it is possible.”

Shanto stressed that Bangladesh must block out distractions and focus on improving gradually as a group. According to him, patience and trust within the squad will be key as the team transitions into a new phase.

“I think we have to shut out the outside noise. We also have to be patient with this group of players. We have to stick to our long-term goals. It would ensure our success.”

The Test captain also acknowledged the need to raise his own standards in the ODI format, insisting that consistency with the bat will be crucial for both himself and the team.

“I think as a batter in the ODI side… I will demand consistency from myself. We haven’t had a great time in ODIs recently, but there is plenty of room for improvement. I believe we can have a better year.”

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the excitement within the squad as they prepare to return to ODI cricket. He believes recent domestic competitions have helped players regain rhythm in the 50-over format.

“Of course it is exciting to play ODIs after a long time; plus it is our first series of the year,” Taskin said.

Assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, meanwhile, emphasised the importance of improving performance in the middle overs, an area where Bangladesh previously relied heavily on experienced players like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim.

For Bangladesh, the Pakistan series may only be the first step, but internally it represents something bigger: a reset, a rebuild, and a renewed chase toward the 2027 ODI World Cup.
