Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has backed the inclusion of emerging wicketkeeper Ghazi Ghori in Pakistan’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh national cricket team, urging critics to give young players the space to grow at the international level.
Speaking during Pakistan’s training camp in Karachi, Rizwan addressed the debate surrounding Ghori’s selection. Despite the skepticism, Rizwan insisted the decision reflects merit and performance rather than speculation.
“Ghazi has come into the team on the basis of performance. Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” Rizwan said.
Ghori is one of six uncapped players named in Pak ODI squad for Bangladesh tour, part of what appears to be a broader attempt to inject fresh talent into the national setup. Rizwan framed the move as a positive sign for Pakistan cricket, particularly in the wicketkeeping department, where competition has historically been limited.
“Right now, Ghazi is in the squad, but if you look at the past, many wicketkeepers have been performing. It’s good if more keepers come through the system because Pakistan might finally find what it has been searching for,” he added.
Beyond the selection debate, Rizwan also cautioned against underestimating Bangladesh in their home conditions.
“On paper, the series may look easy, but Bangladesh are a tough side in their own conditions. The pitches there suit them,” he said.
Rizwan also weighed in on broader issues within the team structure, highlighting the importance of leadership input in selection matters.
“If the selection committee or head coach does not listen to the captain, then that person should not be captain,” he said. “The captain has to lead the team on the field, so his opinion must matter.”
The three-match ODI series between Pakistan and Bangladesh will be played in Dhaka from March 11 to 15.
