Pak vs Ban 2nd Test Day 3 Ends With Mushfiqur Rahim Century To Leave Pakistan A Huge Chase
SYLHET: Bangladesh tightened their stranglehold on the 2nd Test match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, setting Pakistan a monumental fourth-innings target of 437 runs after a grueling third day of play.
Guided by an immaculate batting display from veteran master craftsman Mushfiqur Rahim (137), the home side amassed 390 all out in their second innings before bad light brought an early end to proceedings. At stumps, Pakistan survived a tense two-over burst from the hosts, finishing at 0/0.
Rahim and Das Dictate Terms After Early Scare
Resuming the day at 110/3 with a healthy 156-run cushion, Bangladesh faced early resistance from Pakistan's pace attack. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, starting the morning on 13, could only add two runs before Khurram Shahzad drew first blood. Shahzad trapped Shanto leg-before with a brilliant, sharp inswinger for 15, momentarily raising hopes of a Pakistani fightback.
However, any prospects of a lower-order collapse were firmly extinguished by an 88-run partnership between Rahim and first-innings centurion Litton Das. Das, playing with immense confidence, marched seamlessly toward his half-century and went on to score a dynamic 69 before eventually falling to a short ball from Hasan Ali.
Following Das's dismissal, Rahim anchored the lower order with clinical precision. The experienced batsman paced his innings beautifully, rotating strike while expertly punishing loose deliveries. Supported by useful lower-order cameos from Mehidy Hasan Miraz (19) and Taijul Islam (22), Rahim reached a magnificent century. He struck 12 boundaries and a maximum during his 233-ball stay at the crease, keeping the visitors on the field for over 102 overs.
Pakistan’s bowlers labored on a deteriorating Sylhet surface, though Khurram Shahzad emerged with his reputation enhanced. Shahzad followed his four-wicket haul from the first innings with another exceptional display of discipline, wrapping up figures of 4/86.
Off-spinner Sajid Khan provided support from the other end, utilizing the turning track to chip away at the tail and claim 3/126. Bangladesh's second innings finally concluded at 390, translating to a massive overall lead.
Pakistan Openers Survive Tense Final Spell
With a minimum of two overs left before the close of play, Pakistan openers Abdullah Fazal and Azan Awais faced a probing opening spell under murky skies.
Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed asked tough questions immediately, with Shoriful beating Fazal’s outside edge with a probing delivery that flew toward gully. The opening duo safely negotiated the short burst, maintaining absolute defensive solidity to ensure no wickets fell before the umpires called for stumps due to failing light.
With two days left in the match, the mathematical equation stands firm: Pakistan require a historic 437 runs for victory, while Bangladesh need 10 wickets to sweep the match.
Given the variable bounce and sharp turn on offer for the spinners, the home side will confidently back themselves to wrap up the series on Day 4.
