Sri Lanka may benefit from a significant home advantage in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, with updated semi-final logistics revealing Colombo as a possible host city. The development comes after the Super Eights stage was finalized and stakeholders were informed about venue contingencies.
In its official communication, the ICC confirmed:
"Semi-final 1 is a floating arrangement with the match to be held in either Colombo or Kolkata.
"If Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals, they will play in semi-final 1 in Colombo on 4 March.
"If Pakistan does not qualify for the semi-finals, but Sri Lanka does qualify and play anyone other than India, then Sri Lanka will play in semi-final 1 in Colombo."
This clarification reshapes earlier interpretations of the tournament schedule and introduces a new possibility for Sri Lanka in the World Cup semi-final stage.
If Pakistan secure qualification, Colombo automatically becomes their semi-final venue. However, if Pakistan misses out and Sri Lanka advances while avoiding India as opponents, Sri Lanka will host Semi-final 1 in Colombo.
The ICC also reiterated that if neither Pakistan nor Sri Lanka reaches the last four, Semi-final 1 will be staged in Kolkata and Semi-final 2 in Mumbai. India, if they qualify, are set to play in Mumbai unless drawn against Pakistan, in which case the fixture shifts to Colombo.
Importantly, a Sri Lanka vs Pakistan semi-final cannot occur because both teams are placed in Group 2 of the Super Eights.
When the initial schedule was announced in November, provisions were made for Pakistan’s matches to move to Colombo, but Sri Lanka’s potential home semi-final was not explicitly outlined. The updated clarification now brings fresh excitement for Sri Lankan supporters.
If qualification scenarios align, Colombo could host one of the tournament’s biggest fixtures, giving Sri Lanka a valuable boost at a crucial stage of the competition.
