The historic Gaddafi Stadium played host to a classic defensive battle as Karachi Kings triumphed over Lahore Qalandars by four wickets.
On a surface that offered assistance to the seamers early on and gripped for the spinners later, Lahore Qalandars struggled to find their rhythm after being asked to bat first.
The Kings’ bowling unit, led by the clinical Mir Hamza and the experienced Hasan Ali, stifled the Qalandars' top order. Lahore scored a sub-par total of 128/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Lahore’s innings never truly shifted into top gear. While Abdullah Shafique showed glimpses of class with a brisk 33 off 24 deliveries, he lacked a stable partner at the other end.
The middle order faced a relentless barrage of disciplined line and length, with Haseebullah Khan’s 28 being the only other contribution of note. Karachi’s tactical execution in the death overs was particularly impressive.
In response, Karachi Kings began their chase with caution, aware that the low target required sensible rotation of strike rather than raw aggression. However, the Qalandars’ bowling attack, spearheaded by Shaheen Shah Afridi, made the visitors sweat for every run. Afridi’s opening spell created immediate pressure, and for a moment, it appeared that Lahore might pull off an improbable heist as wickets fell at regular intervals.
The turning point came during the penultimate stages of the chase. Despite losing six wickets, Karachi’s lower-middle order remained composed. They navigated the variations of Lahore’s spin department and waited for the right moments to find the fence. With three balls to spare, Karachi Kings reached 131/6, sparking celebrations PSL 11 in their camp.
