Kane Talks About Missed Chances vs Ghana After Frustrating World Cup Draw
England captain Harry Kane believes his side remain in a strong position at the World Cup despite being held to a goalless draw by Ghana in their second Group L fixture. The result leaves England level on points with Ghana ahead of the final round of group matches, with qualification still firmly within reach.
Attention after the match largely centred on the England striker, and Kane opens up after draw against Ghana by admitting he found it difficult to influence the contest. Ghana's disciplined defensive approach limited England's attacking space and reduced the number of clear opportunities created through the middle.
England entered the match on the back of a convincing victory over Croatia but were unable to reproduce the same attacking fluency. Kane spent much of the game operating away from dangerous areas as Ghana's midfield and defence remained compact throughout.
The England captain also addressed a late opportunity that could have secured all three points. Speaking after the match, Kane talks about missed chances vs Ghana and acknowledged that he would normally expect to convert opportunities of that nature.
"You go through games like that. I was just waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way. It was the kind of game as a striker where you're just waiting for the ball to bounce, and it did. I just couldn't quite get over the ball, but I'd back myself to score that more often than not. It is what it is. I've been a striker long enough to know they don't always go in, so I have to accept it."
Kane also revealed that Ghana's tactical setup played a major role in restricting his involvement. According to the striker, Thomas Partey tracked his movement closely, making it difficult to drop into deeper positions and link play with England's midfield.
"I was almost man-marked by [Thomas] Partey for a lot of the game. I didn't really have the space to drop deep and then arrive late in the box, and they also defended the box well," Kane added. "We had plenty of crosses, but we just couldn't quite get the first contact. The balls through the middle were tough to play because it was so compact in there."
England now face Panama knowing a victory would guarantee first place in Group L and provide momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
