Teams Qualified For Round of 32 At FIFA World Cup 2026
Mexico, the United States, Germany, Argentina, France, and Norway are the first six teams qualified for Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament is currently underway across North America. The implementation of the 48-team expansion format means that the stakes of the group stage have shifted dramatically. Rather than moving directly into a Round of 16, teams are battling to become part of a larger, 32-team knockout field.
This expanded field allows the top two teams from all 12 groups, alongside the eight best third-place finishers, to extend their World Cup campaigns.
As the tournament completes its second round of group stage matches, six powerhouses have distinguished themselves by securing qualification with a game to spare.
Mexico (Group A) El Tri
became the very first nation to officially punch their ticket to the Round of 32. Under the bright lights of their home stadiums, Mexico delivered defensive masterclasses, keeping consecutive clean sheets. They locked up progression following a gritty 1-0 win over South Korea, solidifying their position at the top of Group A and ensuring their first knockout match will be played on home turf at the historic Estadio Azteca.
United States (Group D)
The USMNT matched their neighbors' success by dominating Group D. Following a high-scoring 4-1 opening victory against Paraguay, the Americans secured a clinical 2-0 win over Australia. Combined with adjacent group results, Mauricio Pochettino’s side mathematically clinched the top spot in Group D. This sets up a highly anticipated Round of 32 clash in California.
Germany (Group E)
After disappointing group-stage exits in the previous two iterations of the World Cup, Germany arrived with a clear point to prove. They began their tournament with a statement 7-1 victory over Curacao and followed it up with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. A subsequent draw between their group opponents officially guaranteed Germany the top spot in Group E, sending them into the knockouts with immense momentum.
France & Norway (Group I)
Group I quickly turned into a European showcase, becoming the first group in the tournament to send multiple teams through to the next phase simultaneously. France, a perennial pre-tournament favorite, leaned on the firepower of Kylian Mbappe, who scored consecutive braces against Senegal and Iraq, to book their path.
Meanwhile, Norway, making their return to the global stage after a 28-year absence, matched the French step-for-step. Powered by a sensational second-half double from Erling Haaland to defeat Senegal 3-2, Norway secured their spot alongside Les Bleus. The upcoming final group match between France and Norway is now a straight shootout to determine who wins the group.
Argentina (Group J)
The defending world champions have shown zero signs of a post-championship hangover. Lionel Messi continues to rewrite history, scoring twice in a decisive 2-0 victory over Austria. The win not only sealed Argentina’s ticket to the Round of 32 but also saw Messi break the all-time tournament scoring record. Backed by an opening-round hat-trick against Algeria, Messi has guaranteed that the world champions remain the team to beat as they march into the knockout phase.
The Looming Battle for the Remaining Spots
With 6 teams safely through, the race for the remaining 26 spots in the Round of 32 has reached a boiling point. Heavyweights like Brazil, England, and Spain sit in strong positions at the top of their respective tables but still require the final matchday to mathematically lock in their status.
Simultaneously, the introduction of the "best third-place" rule has kept the tournament alive for teams that suffered early setbacks. Conversely, the margins for error have proven brutal; nations like Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, and Haiti have already been mathematically eliminated after dropping their opening two matches.
The final round of group matches promises dramatic twists as the remaining field fights to join the early qualifiers in the historic Round of 32 bracket.
