BBL 16 Schedule Unveiled with Historic Season Opener Set for Chennai

MELBOURNE: The BBL 2026-27 schedule unveiled by Cricket Australia has introduced several changes to the upcoming season, including an overseas opener, the return of Christmas Eve cricket and an Australia Day final. The BBL 16 schedule unveiled on Saturday also places greater emphasis on reducing travel demands while ensuring every franchise plays at home before Christmas and again in the closing week of the league stage.

The competition will begin on December 12 with an historic fixture in Chennai, where the Melbourne Renegades meet defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Australia's first home fixture follows three days later as the Brisbane Heat host the Sydney Sixers at the Gabba.

Holiday Fixtures Headline Packed Calendar

One of the key additions to the BBL 16 schedule unveiled is the return of a Christmas Eve match, with the Renegades taking on the Hobart Hurricanes at Junction Oval. The 44-match tournament will pause only on Christmas Day, while marquee fixtures have also been scheduled for Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The regular season concludes with double-headers on January 16 and 17 before the four-team finals begin on January 19. The title decider is set for January 26, with a reserve day available if weather affects the championship match.

Travel Changes and Canberra Expansion

Cricket Australia has also reshaped the fixture list to ease travel across the season. Teams will face fewer short turnarounds than in recent editions, and no side has been scheduled to play three matches within five days. An extra day's break between the Challenger and the final has also been introduced after last season's demanding finals travel.

Canberra will stage its biggest BBL programme outside the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season. Sydney Thunder will play two home matches at Manuka Oval, while the Sixers will also use the venue after the Sydney Cricket Ground became unavailable because of the Australia-New Zealand Test.

Melbourne's share of fixtures has increased to nine matches, including both Melbourne derbies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Adelaide's annual New Year's Eve fixture also remains on the calendar, with the Adelaide Strikers hosting the Melbourne Stars at Adelaide Oval.
