Bangladesh Women Defeated Pakistan Women In T20 World Cup Group Stage

Bangladesh Women Defeated Pakistan Women In T20 World Cup Group Stage

Bangladesh Women defeated Pakistan Women by 23 runs in their Group A match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Saturday.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, registering a competitive total of 123/6. In response, Pakistan's batting lineup crumbled under a relentless spin assault, stalling at 100/8 to hand Bangladesh a crucial victory.

Akter’s Late Cameo Rescues Bangladesh

The match began with Pakistan asserting immediate dominance in the Powerplay. Skipper Fatima Sana spearheaded the attack, dismantling Bangladesh's top order to leave them struggling at 23/3 in powerplay. Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana stepped up to stabilize the innings, grinding out a vital 36 off 38 balls to anchor the middle overs.

The momentum swung decisively in the death overs due to an explosive, unbeaten cameo from Shorna Akter. She smashed 39 runs off just 22 deliveries, striking five boundaries to punish Pakistan's death-bowling variations. Akter’s aggressive late flourish added critical runs to the board, elevating Bangladesh from a modest position to a highly competitive 123/6. Fatima Sana finished as the pick of Pakistan's bowlers, returning impressive figures of 2/18.

Pakistan Crumbles Against Spin

Pakistan’s run chase started on a steady note, reaching 64/2 at the 10-over mark. Openers Muneeba Ali (25) and Gull Feroza (23) provided a solid platform, leaving Pakistan needing 60 runs from the final 60 balls with eight wickets intact. However, the introduction of Bangladesh’s spinners triggered an unprecedented batting collapse. Left-arm spinner Sanjida Akter Meghla and veteran Nahida Akter completely choked the run flow, suffocating the batters with exceptional control and flight.

The turning point arrived when Meghla struck twice in a single over, dismissing Ayesha Zafar (11) and removing veteran all-rounder Aliya Riaz for a duck. This double blow destabilized the chase, causing Pakistan to slide from a position of relative comfort to a precarious 70/4.

The pressure proved insurmountable for the lower order. Pakistan’s hitters failed to clear the ropes, going entirely boundary-less for the final 12 overs of the match. Nahida Akter then tore through the tail, cleaning up the remaining resistance, including the vital scalp of Fatima Sana for 10, to leave Pakistan stranded at 84/8 before wrapping up the match. Both Nahida Akter (3/18) and Sanjida Akter Meghla (3/21) finished with three wickets each to dismantle the opposition.

Tournament Implications

With this performance, Bangladesh secures their second win of the tournament, keeping their hopes alive for a semi-final berth. For Pakistan, this result marks their third consecutive defeat in Group A, effectively ending their realistic chances of advancing in the tournament.
