Fazalhaq Farooqi Blitz Reduces Zimbabwe to 33/3 in AFG vs ZIM Powerplay

Fazalhaq Farooqi Blitz Reduces Zimbabwe to 33/3 in AFG vs ZIM Powerplay

ABU DHABI: A blistering opening spell from Afghanistan’s frontline pace attack has left Zimbabwe struggles in Powerplay conditions defining the start of the second innings at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Chasing a demanding target of 295 runs for victory in the second match of the UAE ODI Tri-Series, Zimbabwe found themselves thoroughly choked by a relentless Afghan bowling unit, stuttering to a dismal 33 for 3 at the end of the mandatory 10-over powerplay.

Defending a highly competitive total of 294, which was anchored earlier by a magnificent century from Sediqullah Atal, Afghanistan’s speed merchants took full advantage of the fresh white ball under the floodlights. Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi led the charge with absolute precision, extracting sharp movement off the pitch and asking uncomfortable questions from the very first ball.

The pressure told immediately on the Zimbabwean openers. Forced to tentative defensive strokes, the top order failed to counter the swing and seam on offer. Farooqi struck the first crucial blow in his second over, cleaning up the top order with a delivery that nipped back sharply to rattle the woodwork. The stadium erupted as Afghanistan asserted their dominance early, establishing a stranglehold that Zimbabwe found impossible to break.

AM Ghazanfar, sharing the new ball, provided exemplary support from the opposite end. He maintained a tight, probing line around off-stump, restricting scoring opportunities and amplifying the mounting required run rate. The built-up pressure culminated in another breakthrough.

By the time the AFG vs ZIM powerplay reached its midpoint, Zimbabwe’s frontline was in complete disarray at 25 for 2. The arrival of veteran all-rounder Sikandar Raza brought a semblance of stability, but the Afghan captain kept the field aggressive, employing three slips and a gully to hunt for more blood.

The tactical aggression paid off in the eighth over when veteran Brendan Taylor ran out after scoring just 1 run as Zimbabwe slumped to a desperate 26 for 3.

As the field restrictions are lifted at the conclusion of the 10th over, Zimbabwe walked away from the initial phase needing a monumental effort to rescue their chase.

Averaging just over three runs an over, the African side faces an uphill battle against an elite spin contingent waiting to dictate the middle overs.
