Sediqullah Atal's Century Powers Afghanistan to 294 Against Zimbabwe in UAE ODI Tri-Series
ABU DHABI: A masterclass in modern opening batsmanship from Sediqullah Atal propelled Afghanistan to a commanding position in the second match of the UAE ODI Tri-Series, as Afghanistan scores 294 for nine in 50 overs against Zimbabwe at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Opting to bat first on a surface that offered early assistance to the bowlers, Afghanistan’s strategy was anchored by a magnificent, fluid top-order partnership. The headline of the afternoon belonged entirely to Sediqullah Atal's century, a knock of supreme discipline and calculated aggression that silenced the Zimbabwean bowling attack.
Atal played the sheet-anchor role with perfection, bringing up his milestone century off 110 deliveries, an innings punctuated by elegant drives and authoritative pulls.
Atal found an equally stubborn partner in Ibrahim Zadran. The duo put on a clinical display of running between the wickets and boundary-hitting, systematically dismantling Zimbabwe's initial bowling plans. Zadran’s half-century provided a good baseline, but he fell just short of a century, dismissed for a fluent 90 off 96 balls. Their partnership laid a rock-solid foundation, threatening to push the score well beyond the 320-mark.
However, Zimbabwe staged a spirited fightback in the final fifteen overs to claw their way back into the contest. Just as Afghanistan looked poised for a massive death-overs onslaught, Zimbabwe’s bowling unit found their rhythm. Right-arm medium-pacer Ernest Masuku was the chief architect of the comeback, mixing his lengths beautifully to finish with figures of 3 for 44 across his 8 overs.
Masuku was brilliantly supported by Brad Evans, who regularized the scoring rate by picking up crucial wickets at the death, finishing with 3 for 48 from his 10-over quota.
The double strike in the 50th over triggered a collapse, ensuring Afghanistan was restricted to 294.
Despite the late hiccups, Afghanistan will feel immensely confident with a defensive target of 295 on the board. With the Zayed Cricket Stadium pitch historically slowing down under lights, the Afghan spin twins will be raring to exploit the conditions.
For Zimbabwe, who enter this match with high morale following a comprehensive 99-run victory over Bangladesh in the tournament opener, the run chase presents a steep mountain to climb. The Chevrons will need a flying start from their openers and a repeat of their middle-order resilience if they are to overhaul Afghanistan's total and maintain their unbeaten run in the tri-series.
The stage is set for a thrilling second half under the Abu Dhabi floodlights.
