DURBAN: A monumental innings from middle-order batsman Matt Renshaw placed the visitors firmly in the driver’s seat on the SA vs AUS 1st Test Day 2 at Kingsmead. Reeling from a precarious collapse on opening day, Australia engineered a brilliant lower-order fightback to finish their first innings at a commanding 390 all out.

In reply, South Africa navigated a tense, shortened final session under overcast skies to reach 27/1 at stumps, trailing by a massive 363 runs.

Resuming on 46 with Australia at 187/6, the left-handed batsman produced a masterclass in application and defensive discipline. Renshaw's century, his first in Test cricket in nearly a decade since his 184 against Pakistan in 2017, was met with an outpouring of emotion as he anchored the crease for a grueling 397 deliveries. He hit 21 boundaries and a six during his defiant stay, seamlessly shifting gears to shield the tailenders.

Renshaw found an initially reliable ally in skipper Pat Cummins, who contributed a vital 43 off 98 balls. The pair frustrated the Proteas' frontline attack with an 83-run partnership before Cummins fell. While South Africa’s bowlers continued to strike in patches, spearheaded by an impressive Wiaan Mulder who finished with excellent figures of 4/68, it was a frustrating ninth-wicket partnership that truly broke the hosts' resolve.

Nathan Lyon played a stellar supporting role, chipping in with a patient 27 runs from 92 balls to stitch together a record-shattering 134-run stand alongside a relentless Renshaw. It set a new benchmark for Australia's highest ninth-wicket partnership against South Africa, as well as the highest ever recorded for that wicket in Durban.

The Proteas' pace assault, led by Mulder and Marco Jansen (3/68), bowled with immense heart but grew noticeably weary as the sessions wore on. The heroic 137.2-over Australian innings finally concluded shortly after the tea interval when off-spinner Simon Harmer snared the prized scalp of Renshaw, caught at slip to deny him a historic double-century by just ten runs.

With a daunting first-innings deficit to erase, the pressure shifted squarely onto the home side's opening batsmen. Australian speedster Josh Hazlewood struck an immediate, devastating blow in the second over, trapping South African opener Ryan Rickelton for a three-ball duck, caught at third slip by Beau Webster.

Struggling under the early setback, Aiden Markram (15*) and David Bedingham (12*) dug deep into their defensive reserves to ensure no further damage was done. Bad light forced a premature halt to the action, bringing a sudden end to an exhilarating day of the South Africa vs Australia rivalry.

As the teams look toward Day 3, Australia remains overwhelmingly in command of this SA vs AUS 1st Test.

Matt Renshaw’s 190 and a record 134-run stand with Nathan Lyon propelled Australia to 390 before South Africa reached 27/1 on SA vs AUS 1st Test Day 2.

South Africa vs Australia 1st Test Match Details and Preview

Tony de Zorzi will miss South Africa’s first Test against Australia in Durban next Friday after picking up a hamstring injury. He is the fifth South African player to suffer a hamstring problem in the last two months, following Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman and Kwena Maphaka.

De Zorzi picked up the injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Potchefstroom. Cricket South Africa described the issue as mild but confirmed that it will keep him out of the first Test.

South Africa had already named an extended 18-player preliminary squad and have decided not to call up a replacement. They will select their final 15 players early next week.

With De Zorzi unavailable, Marques Ackerman now has a better chance of making his Test debut. The No. 3 batter earned his place in the squad after putting together some strong performances for South Africa A.

Ackerman recently scored a career-best 256 against Bangladesh A and is now in the race for a place in the final XI. Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder and David Bedingham are also in contention, with Bedingham another option to bat at No. 5.

There is some good news regarding South Africa’s other injured players. Kagiso Rabada, who picked up his hamstring problem during winter training, remains part of the preliminary squad. His availability for the Durban Test will be decided after the two-day intra-squad match begins tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Ngidi, Maphaka and Baartman have been ruled out of the Australia series. They are expected to return later in the summer, with South Africa also set to host Bangladesh and England.

Speaking about the injury, Ngidi said he is currently completing his rehabilitation period, and is focused on returning to the squad before the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

"I'm not allowed to disclose anything. But all I can tell you is, so far, so good. I'm back running already. That's about as much as I can let you know," said Lungi Ngidi while talking to the reporters.

Tony de Zorzi has been ruled out of South Africa’s first Test against Australia due to a hamstring injury. His absence will now open the doors for Marques Ackerman, who recently performed well in the domestic matches.

Tony De Zorzi Ruled Out Of South Africa’s Series Opener Against Australia

Australia ended the ODI series against South Africa with a consolation win in the rain-hit final match at Potchefstroom. Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh both scored half-centuries, while Adam Zampa also returned to form with a strong bowling performance.

South Africa had made a decent start to their chase, but rain interrupted the game and brought the match to an early end. Ryan Rickelton was leading the response with an unbeaten 71 off 81 balls before the weather stopped play. Nevertheless, the Aussies were in a commanding position at that point, which helped them win the match by 45 runs (DLS method).

Australia started the first innings on a high note, as Mitchell Marsh batted confidently to deflate the South African bowling attack. He struck a brilliant 56 off just 42 balls, giving the Aussies a solid platform to reach a big total.

In the middle order, Oliver Peake and Alex Carey played remarkable innings, making sure to keep Australia on top with regular boundaries. Alex Carey’s knock was particularly worth watching, as he struck 74 off just 88 balls with the help of 4 fours and 2 sixes. Due to his tremendous batting, the visitors scored 322 in the first innings for the loss of nine wickets.

Coming out to chase the target, South Africa had a terrible start, as they lost both openers early in the Powerplay. Ryan Rickelton then played a fine knock to get their innings back on track, however, the other middle-order batters struggled to match his pace. Credit to the Aussies, they bowled beautifully in the middle overs, making sure to keep the Proteas under pressure.

The rain then arrived abruptly at the end of 28 overs, when South Africa had scored 145 for the loss of four wickets. As per the DLS calculation, they were behind by approximately 45 runs when the game was stopped. This allowed Australia to seal the victory, gaining a well-deserved consolation win in the third and final ODI of the series. Alex Carey was then named Player of the Match, as his quality knock in the first innings allowed the Aussies to post a big total, which eventually proved too big to chase for the Proteas.

Australia secured a consolation win over South Africa in the rain-hit third ODI, with Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh making key contributions with the bat.

Australia Finish on Winning Note as Carey, Marsh and Zampa Shine in Third ODI

POTCHEFSTROOM: South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bowl first in the third ODI against Australia at Senwes Park. After an initial delay caused by a wet outfield, the coin finally landed in favor of the hosts, who are hunting a flawless 3-0 series clean sweep.

With an unassailable 2-0 lead already tucked under their belt, the Proteas have used this dead-rubber fixture to experiment and manage player workloads. Addressing the decision at the toss, Markram highlighted that tactical flexibility and the overhead conditions played a primary role in wanting to exploit any early moisture in the surface.

Having registered comprehensive victories in Durban and Johannesburg, the South Africans look primed to finish their bumper home assignment on a high.

Conversely, Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh admitted he would have leaned toward batting first regardless, looking to put a commanding total on the board to stress-test their defensive plans.

The visitors have endured a grueling tour plagued by mounting injury concerns and structural inconsistencies. Staring down the barrel of a potential series whitewash, this encounter serves as Australia's final chance to salvage pride and generate critical momentum before transitioning into the highly anticipated Test series.

The Senwes Park strip traditionally offers an even contest between bat and ball, though the dampness from the delayed start adds an intriguing layer of complexity for the openers.

Tactical adjustments are at the forefront for both teams; South Africa has strategically rested several Test-bound stalwarts to test their bench depth, while the Australian camp has reconfigured its bowling attack to combat a formidable Proteas batting lineup that has already posted massive totals of 297 and 365 in the series.

As the umpires call play under clearing skies, Australia faces a steep mountain to climb to disrupt South Africa's dominant white-ball streak.

SA vs AUS 3rd ODI Toss: South Africa Chose to Bowl

South Africa will look to complete a 3-0 ODI series sweep when they face Australia in the third and final match at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 9:30 PM PKT. The Proteas have already secured the series, but Australia will be determined to avoid another defeat before their upcoming Test campaign.

The South Africa vs Australia 3rd ODI preview points to another competitive contest, with South Africa carrying strong momentum and Australia searching for answers after two costly batting collapses.

South Africa vs Australia 3rd ODI Preview

South Africa have controlled the series through their batting depth and ability to strike at crucial stages. Matthew Breetzke's century helped them win the opener in Durban by 67 runs, while Temba Bavuma and David Miller produced hundreds in Johannesburg as the hosts secured a 32-run victory.

Australia have shown flashes of attacking cricket but struggled to maintain that momentum. Their middle order collapsed after promising starts in both matches, while their bowlers have also found it difficult to contain South Africa's late-innings acceleration.

With the series already decided, South Africa could rotate their squad and manage workloads ahead of a demanding multi-format schedule. Australia, meanwhile, have more at stake individually, with players such as Alex Carey needing a strong performance to strengthen their claims in an evolving batting order.

South Africa vs Australia Series Recap

The opening ODI at Kingsmead saw South Africa post 297/8 after Matthew Breetzke registered his maiden ODI century with a composed 100. Australia made an excellent start to the chase, reaching 129/1 after Mitchell Marsh's explosive 26-ball half-century.

However, the visitors lost nine wickets for 101 runs and were dismissed for 230. South Africa's bowlers exploited the middle-order weakness to secure a 67-run victory.

The second ODI at the Wanderers followed a similar pattern. South Africa reached 365/9, powered by centuries from captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller. Australia fought harder during the chase, with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh both scoring 84.

Debutant Jack Edwards impressed with the ball, taking 5/67, but South Africa's attack eventually gained control. Lizaad Williams claimed 3/54, while Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin restricted the Australian lower order. Australia finished on 333, giving South Africa a 32-run win and an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Key Player Battles

Travis Head vs Marco Jansen

Head remains one of Australia's biggest threats with the new ball. Jansen's height, bounce and left-arm angle could challenge him during the powerplay, particularly if the surface offers early movement.

David Miller vs Adam Zampa

Miller produced a career-best 142 in Johannesburg and will again be central to South Africa's finishing plans. Zampa will be looking for a stronger response after conceding 77 runs without taking a wicket in the second ODI.

Mitchell Marsh vs Keshav Maharaj

Marsh has produced two important innings in the series, but South Africa's spinners have repeatedly disrupted Australia's middle order. Maharaj's ability to control the scoring rate could put pressure on Marsh and the batters around him.

South Africa vs Australia 3rd ODI Preview: Proteas Eye 3-0 Sweep

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa secured an unassailable 2-0 series victory after surviving a fierce run-chase to defeat Australia in 2nd ODI by 32 runs in a high-scoring thriller.

Fueled by masterclass centuries from Temba Bavuma and David Miller, the Proteas posted a colossal 365/9 before bowling out the visitors for 333 in the final over.

Proteas Top-Order Recovers to Post Massive Total

At the start of SA vs AUS 2nd ODI, Australia’s decision to bowl first yielded early rewards as Josh Hazlewood struck crucial early blows. However, the game completely shifted gears when skipper Temba Bavuma was joined by the explosive David Miller. The duo anchored the innings with a spectacular 156-run partnership.

Bavuma’s century provided the perfect anchor for the host nation. The captain blended pristine timing with sensible rotation of strike, reaching his milestone 103 off 116 balls, featuring 10 boundaries.

On the other end, Miller took the Australian attack to the cleaners. He brutalised the boundary ropes, blasting a sensational 142 off just 93 deliveries to push the score past 350. Despite the carnage, Australian medium-pacer Jack Edwards registered a heroic milestone of his own, pulling back momentum late in the innings to finish with career-best figures of 5/67.

Australia Mounts Fierce Reply via Twin 84s

Faced with a daunting target of 366, Australia launched a breathtaking counter-attack. Openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh dismantled the Proteas' new-ball attack with ruthless aggression. Both batsmen matched each other stroke for stroke, scoring identical, quickfire 84s. At 130/1 in the 17th over, the visitors looked firmly on course to pull off a record-breaking chase.

However, the introduction of spin and clever change of pace brought the Proteas back into the contest. A sharp breakthrough broke the ominous opening stand, triggering a middle-order collapse.

Proteas Bowlers Hold Nerve in Final Overs

As the required run rate mounted, South Africa’s bowling unit showed immense discipline under pressure. Lizaad Williams led the charge, extracting crucial bounce to finish with match-winning figures of 3/54.

The lower order of Australia kept swinging, bringing the equation down to the final over. However, South Africa held their nerve, taking the final wicket with just two balls left in the match.

With this victory, South Africa defeats Australia in 2nd ODI to claim the silverware with a game to spare, leaving the third match a dead rubber but an absolute must-watch for cricket fans.

Powered by Miller and Bavuma's centuries, South Africa defeats Australia in 2nd ODI by 32 runs to secure an unassailable series lead in Johannesburg.

South Africa Defeats Australia in 2nd ODI to Claim Series

Australia could be without Josh Inglis for the Test series against South Africa next month, with a finger injury now raising doubts over his availability. The wicketkeeper-batter has already been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs after fracturing his right index finger.

The injury happened while Inglis was fielding in Australia’s opening ODI in Durban. He stayed on to bat but made only three runs before Bjorn Fortuin dismissed him while he attempted a reverse sweep. The setback comes after Inglis had ended Australia’s previous ODI series against Zimbabwe on a high, hitting his second century in the format in the final game in Harare.

"The West Australian will return home for scans with his availability for the three-match Test series subject to further assessment and progress," said the official CA statement.

Alex Carey is expected to take back the gloves for Australia’s next ODI in Johannesburg following Inglis’ injury. The two have shared the team in recent matches, with Inglis keeping wicket and Carey playing in the field.

Inglis remains part of the Test squad, where he was picked mainly as a backup batter and wicketkeeper. He has featured in five Tests and has batted at different spots between No. 4 and No. 7. His Test career started with a century against Sri Lanka in early 2025, but his form has dipped since then, with his highest score in the next six innings being 32.

The bigger concern is his role for the Test series. If Inglis cannot recover before Australia’s Test in Durban next month, the team may need to add another wicketkeeper to the squad. Carey would otherwise be the only specialist option, meaning an injury to him could leave Australia without a replacement.

Australia will face the same concern in Sunday’s second ODI at the Wanderers, but bringing in another player from home is not possible at such short notice.

Australia could look towards Josh Philippe or Sam Harper if another wicketkeeper is needed. Both players are currently with Australia A in India, where the team has just finished the first four-day game.

Philippe scored 14 and 7 in Australia A’s big defeat in that match. He has also been part of Australia’s white-ball plans over the past year. Harper, meanwhile, has put himself into the picture after a strong 2025-26 season with Victoria, where he made a big contribution as an opening batter in the Sheffield Shield.

Updated Australia Squad for ODI Series Against South Africa

Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Joel Davies, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Spencer Johnson, Mitchell Marsh, Ollie Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa.

Josh Inglis is in doubt for Australia’s Test series against South Africa after fracturing his finger, with Alex Carey set to return as wicketkeeper for remaining ODI matches.

Inglis Faces Test Doubt After Finger Fracture Rules Him Out Of South Africa ODIs

DURBAN: A masterclass in spin bowling from Keshav Maharaj and a brilliant century by Matthew Breetzke propelled South Africa to a comprehensive victory over Australia in the 1st ODI at Kingsmead.

In a thrilling encounter that swung dramatically across both innings, South Africa defeats Australia in 1st ODI, sealing a comprehensive victory to take a 1-0 lead in the bilateral series. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Proteas successfully defended a competitive total as South Africa won by 67 runs after bowling out the visitors in clinical fashion.

Opting to field first after winning the toss, Australia’s bowling unit found immediate rhythm, asking tough questions of the South African top order. The hosts found themselves in a spot of bother early on, losing key wickets cheaply under the overcast Durban skies. However, top-order batsman Matthew Breetzke anchored the innings with immense maturity.

Breetzke paced his century beautifully, bringing up a magnificent 112 off 106 deliveries. He found an able partner in all-rounder Marco Jansen, who counter-attacked fiercely to smash a rapid 75 off 59 balls. Together, the duo stitched a vital 107-run partnership for the sixth wicket, resurrecting the Proteas from a precarious position and guiding them to a robust total of 297/8 in 50 overs. Nathan Ellis finished with commendable figures of 3 for 57.

In reply, Australia’s chase began with absolute fireworks. Skipper Mitchell Marsh launched a brutal assault on the South African pace attack during the powerplay restrictions. Marsh’s blistering 60 off just 36 balls, which included six maximums, looked set to turn the run chase into a cakewalk as Australia rocketed to 96/1 within the first 10 overs. The visitors looked firmly in control, scoring at a rate that left the Proteas skipper searching for answers.

The turning point of the contest arrived with the introduction of spin on a gripping Kingsmead surface. It was Keshav Maharaj's four-wicket haul that completely turned the tide of the match. The left-arm orthodox spinner choked the run flow and triggered a catastrophic batting collapse from which the Australians could never recover.

Maharaj finished with spectacular figures of 4 for 20 across 9.2 overs, bamboozling the middle order with his flight and sharp turn. He received excellent support from fellow spinner Bjorn Fortuin, who picked up 2 for 34.

From a position of absolute dominance, Australia's batting lineup crumbled against the turning ball, losing their final nine wickets for just 134 runs. The visitors were eventually bundled out for 230 in 41.2 overs.

Breetzke was named Player of the Match for his rescue act, but it was the discipline of the spin twins that guaranteed the victory. The teams will now travel to Johannesburg, where South Africa will look to carry this winning momentum into the second ODI on September 27.

Driven by a Matthew Breetzke century and Keshav Maharaj's four-wicket haul, South Africa defeats Australia in 1st ODI as South Africa won by 67 runs.
