South Africa Defeats Australia in 2nd ODI by 32 Runs

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa secured an unassailable 2-0 series victory after surviving a fierce run-chase to defeat Australia in 2nd ODI by 32 runs in a high-scoring thriller. 

Fueled by masterclass centuries from Temba Bavuma and David Miller, the Proteas posted a colossal 365/9 before bowling out the visitors for 333 in the final over.

Proteas Top-Order Recovers to Post Massive Total

At the start of SA vs AUS 2nd ODI, Australia’s decision to bowl first yielded early rewards as Josh Hazlewood struck crucial early blows. However, the game completely shifted gears when skipper Temba Bavuma was joined by the explosive David Miller. The duo anchored the innings with a spectacular 156-run partnership.

Bavuma’s century provided the perfect anchor for the host nation. The captain blended pristine timing with sensible rotation of strike, reaching his milestone 103 off 116 balls, featuring 10 boundaries. 

On the other end, Miller took the Australian attack to the cleaners. He brutalised the boundary ropes, blasting a sensational 142 off just 93 deliveries to push the score past 350. Despite the carnage, Australian medium-pacer Jack Edwards registered a heroic milestone of his own, pulling back momentum late in the innings to finish with career-best figures of 5/67.

Faced with a daunting target of 366, Australia launched a breathtaking counter-attack. Openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh dismantled the Proteas' new-ball attack with ruthless aggression. Both batsmen matched each other stroke for stroke, scoring identical, quickfire 84s. At 130/1 in the 17th over, the visitors looked firmly on course to pull off a record-breaking chase.

However, the introduction of spin and clever change of pace brought the Proteas back into the contest. A sharp breakthrough broke the ominous opening stand, triggering a middle-order collapse.

Proteas Bowlers Hold Nerve in Final Overs

As the required run rate mounted, South Africa’s bowling unit showed immense discipline under pressure. Lizaad Williams led the charge, extracting crucial bounce to finish with match-winning figures of 3/54.
