MACKAY: In a one-sided contest, Aus defeats Ban by an innings and 51 runs in just two days at the Great Barrier Reef Arena. Spearheaded by an unstoppable Mitchell Starc, the hosts bounded back from their shock defeat in Darwin to level the two-match AUS vs BAN series 1–1.

The match will go down in history as the second-shortest Test ever played on Australian soil, lasting a mere five sessions. The defining story of the match was Australia’s absolute bowling supremacy. After winning the toss and electing to bowl on a surface that offered assistance to the quicks, the Australian pace battery left the Bangladeshi batting order completely exposed.

In the first innings, Bangladesh was bundled out for a paltry 64 runs in just 34 overs. Left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc was the destroyer-in-chief, generating lethal swing and venomous pace to finish with astonishing figures of 6 for 12. The touring batsmen had no answers to his probing lines, with Shoriful Islam’s 14 runs top-scoring in a dismal team display.

Australia's response with the bat was far from flawless, but it proved more than enough to establish a decisive advantage. The home side was bowled out for 210 in 52.3 overs, ahead by 146 runs. All-rounder Cameron Green anchored the innings with 67, while veteran batsman Steve Smith contributed a solid 42.

Despite Australia’s batting collapse, Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam shone brightly amidst the gloom, claiming career-best figures of 7 for 48 to momentarily give the visitors a glimmer of hope. However, any thoughts of a Bangladeshi fightback were instantly crushed on Day 2. Facing a 146-run deficit, the tourists crumpled yet again under unrelenting pressure. Bangladesh was bowled out for just 95 runs in 38.3 overs during their second dig.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto offered resistance with a fighting 31, but he lacked any meaningful support from the opposite end. Starc continued his magical run, picking up 4 for 39 in the second innings to finish with a spectacular match haul of 10 for 51. He was ably supported by captain Pat Cummins, who snared a microscopic 3 for 10, and spinner Nathan Lyon, who cleaned up the tail with 3 for 25 just after the tea session.

This catastrophic batting performance marked the first time in Test cricket history that Bangladesh has been bowled out for double-digit scores in both innings of a single match. For his lethal display across both days, Mitchell Starc was rightfully named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

With this emphatic victory, Australia vindicates its top ranking and extends its lead at the peak of the World Test Championship standings.

Pat Cummins had few excuses after Australia were beaten by Bangladesh in a result that has already raised serious questions about the hosts' batting.

The nine-wicket defeat at Marrara Stadium gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil and their second victory against Australia in Test cricket. The result also leaves the hosts needing a sharp response before the second Test in Mackay on August 22.

Cummins admitted Australia had been beaten across the board. Bangladesh showed greater patience, held their catches and kept Australia under pressure whenever the home side tried to recover.

“They were a much better side than us this week,” Cummins said, acknowledging that Bangladesh had “outplayed us in all facets.”

The Australia captain also refused to hide behind preparation. Australia had spent weeks preparing for the series, yet their batting failed badly when the match began.

“I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuse,” he said.

Cummins Raises Fresh Questions Over Australia's Batting

The biggest concern now sits at the top of Australia's order. Jake Weatherald managed 23 and a duck, while Marnus Labuschagne made 1 and 31. Cameron Green's century and Steve Smith's contributions could not rescue an innings that repeatedly lost momentum.

Cummins suggested the selectors may have to decide whether the poor output was a one-off or part of a deeper problem.

“It’s one test, but it’s also a little bit of a trend as well,” he said.

That comment will attract attention. Australia have another Test almost immediately, leaving little time to ignore the warning signs.

Bangladesh made the most of every opening. Hasan Mahmud claimed six wickets in Australia's first innings, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a major role with both bat and ball. Australia were dismissed for 198 before Bangladesh built a 228-run lead.

Australia fought back through Green's 104 in the second innings, but 284 was never enough. Bangladesh needed only 57 and completed the chase comfortably.

For Pat Cummins, the defeat now comes with a selection problem attached. The Australia vs Bangladesh Test series has exposed weaknesses Australia can no longer brush aside.

Cummins knows the next decision matters. Leave the batting order alone and hope the problem disappears, or intervene before the issue grows? The second Test may provide that answer.

Pat Cummins admits Australia must rethink their batting after Bangladesh sealed a stunning nine-wicket win in Darwin.

Pat Cummins Admits Australia Have a Batting Problem After Shock Loss

Steve Smith DRS controversy has taken another turn after the Australian batter admitted he believed he had edged Ebadot Hossain behind during the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Marrara Oval.

Smith was given a major reprieve in the 21st over when Hossain found the outside edge and Litton Das completed what looked like a straightforward catch. Bangladesh celebrated, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena rejected the appeal.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto reviewed the decision immediately. The replay left both teams staring at the screen. Snicko showed no spike, so the decision was overturned and Smith stayed at the crease.

Smith later admitted he thought the ball had touched his bat.

“I certainly felt something,” Smith said after play. “But yeah, technology saved me today, I guess.”

That admission will add fuel to the debate around DRS. The technology faced scrutiny during the Ashes, and another disputed edge has reopened questions over confidence in the available evidence.

Smith escape adds pressure to DRS

The Steve Smith DRS controversy arrived on a day when Australia struggled for control with the bat. Smith top-scored with 71, but Australia were dismissed for a modest total before Bangladesh reached 96 for one by stumps.

For Australia, the escape became important as the innings progressed. Smith settled after the scare, dug in and produced the highest score in the Australian card.

The wider Australia vs Bangladesh Test contest now carries another talking point beyond the score. Bangladesh can point to the evidence, while Australia can argue that the technology followed protocol.

That is where the frustration sits. A player can feel the edge, the fielding side can celebrate, and the replay can still deliver a different verdict.

The Steve Smith DRS controversy is unlikely to disappear quickly, especially after Smith himself raised doubts about what happened.

The Australia vs Bangladesh Test has already produced a talking point that could follow the teams beyond the first day. Smith survived, scored 71 and walked away admitting he may have been fortunate. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will wonder how close they came to removing Australia’s key batter early.

Steve Smith admits technology saved him after a disputed DRS call against Bangladesh, raising fresh questions over the controversial review.

DRS Controversy Follows Steve Smith After Bangladesh Test Escape

Australia’s bowlers had chances to pull the innings back, but the scoreboard kept moving. Tanzid Hasan gave Bangladesh the platform with a composed 101, his maiden Test century on Australian soil, while Najmul Hossain Shanto added 84. Mominul Haque also looked set for a big score before falling for 49.

The bigger concern for Australia is how little pressure they have created since the first session. Mitchell Starc finished with 2/60 from 19 overs and Nathan Lyon took 1/91 from 23.5. Pat Cummins picked up one wicket, but Bangladesh have still managed to build a commanding advantage.

Australia’s Attack Under Pressure

The Bangladesh first innings has now moved 140 runs ahead, and Australia’s fielding side faces a difficult final stretch. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was unbeaten on 19 from 41 balls, with Hasan Mahmud alongside him on 11 from 47.

Those numbers tell only part of the story. Australia have used their attack for long spells, yet Bangladesh have repeatedly found ways to survive. Lyon has conceded heavily without breaking the innings open, while Starc has had to carry a significant workload.

The Bangladesh first innings could become decisive if the lower order adds another 40 or 50 runs. A lead approaching 180 would put Australia under enormous pressure when they return to bat.

That leaves a serious question hanging over the hosts. Was the bowling plan good enough for this surface, or did Australia simply fail to adapt quickly enough?

The Bangladesh vs Australia first Test has already produced a result most Australian supporters would have wanted to avoid after their 198 all out. Hasan Mahmud’s six-wicket haul on the opening day set the tone, and Bangladesh’s batters have followed it with patience.

Now the visitors are within touching distance of a huge first-innings advantage. Australia need wickets. Another hour of resistance could push this Test into a different territory.

Bangladesh vs Australia first Test has turned into a serious examination of Australia’s bowling attack, while the visitors suddenly have a chance to dictate the rest of the match.

Bangladesh lead Australia by 140 runs in Darwin as Tanzid Hasan’s century and a stubborn lower order leave the hosts searching for answers. on Day 2.

Australia Stumble Again As Bangladesh Push Lead Beyond 140 Runs

Bangladesh enjoyed a memorable opening day against Australia in Darwin, with Hasan Mahmud delivering a superb fast-bowling performance before the visiting batters strengthened their team's position late in the day.

Australia chose to bat first after winning the toss and initially appeared comfortable. Openers Jake Weatherald and Travis Head put together a 45-run opening partnership, but Bangladesh quickly changed the direction of the innings once Hasan found his rhythm. Weatherald departed for 23 before Head followed for 22, leaving the hosts under pressure.

Australia's problems increased as their middle order struggled to establish partnerships. Marnus Labuschagne managed only one run, while Cameron Green was dismissed for 13. Bangladesh's pacers maintained their discipline and continued to create opportunities on a surface offering assistance to the bowlers.

Steve Smith provided the resistance Australia desperately needed. The experienced batter held the innings together with a determined 71 from 109 deliveries, hitting seven fours and one six. However, he received limited support as Bangladesh continued to take wickets around him.

Hasan eventually brought Smith's innings to an end, completing a career-best 6/55. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also played important roles, taking two wickets each as Australia were dismissed for only 198. It was Australia's lowest Test total against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh then showed that their strong position was not built solely on favourable bowling conditions.

The visitors lost Shadman Islam after an opening stand of 36, but Australia were unable to turn that breakthrough into a batting collapse. Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque responded with an unbeaten partnership to safely take Bangladesh through to stumps.

Bangladesh ended Day 1 strongly at 96/1, with Mominul unbeaten on 35 and Tanzid on 32, trailing Australia by 102 runs. Mitchell Starc became Test cricket’s leading left-arm wicket-taker, but Hasan Mahmud’s six-wicket haul ensured Bangladesh held the advantage heading into Day 2.

Hasan Mahmud claimed a career-best six wickets as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 before reaching 96/1 on Day 1 of the first Test in Darwin.

Australia vs Bangladesh 1st Test: Hasan Mahmud Dominates Day 1

Australia reached 198 in the first innings before Bangladesh slipped to 62 for 1 late in the opening day at the TIO Stadium, leaving the hosts 136 runs behind with plenty of work ahead.

Steve Smith provided the backbone for Australia, compiling a patient 71 from 109 balls. He struck seven fours and a six, holding the innings together after early wickets exposed the middle order. Travis Head added 22, while Jake Weatherald made 23 before both fell to Hasan Mahmud.

The innings never fully settled after Australia lost three wickets for 74, but Smith kept the visitors moving. Cameron Green chipped in with 13, Alex Carey made 19 and Beau Webster produced a brisk 12 from 10 balls. Pat Cummins added nine.

Hasan Mahmud led Bangladesh’s attack with four wickets for 55 runs from 17 overs. Taskin Ahmed claimed two wickets, while Ebadot Hossain also finished with two. Bangladesh’s bowlers managed to keep Australia from building a much bigger total after the visitors won the toss and chose to bat.

The hosts then faced a testing final phase of the session.

Bangladesh lost Shadman Islam for 20 from 30 balls, caught by Nathan Lyon off Mitchell Starc, but the response from the remaining batters was steady. Tanzid Hasan reached 19 not out from 43 deliveries, while Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 16 from 24.

That left Bangladesh at 62 for 1 after 16.1 overs, with Australia still holding a sizeable first-innings advantage. Starc took the only wicket so far for Australia, while Josh Hazlewood bowled four tight overs for nine runs.

The Australia vs Bangladesh 1st Test has already produced a useful contest between Bangladesh’s new-ball challenge and Australia’s experienced batting group. The hosts will need to close the gap quickly on the second day, especially with Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood waiting for another chance with the ball.

For Australia, the biggest question is whether 198 proves enough to build pressure. Smith’s 71 has given them a platform, but Bangladesh have avoided the kind of collapse that could have put the game firmly in the visitors’ hands.

Steve Smith gave Australia stability they needed after wickets fell around him.

The Australia vs Bangladesh 1st Test remains finely poised despite Australia’s early advantage. Bangladesh have seven wickets in hand and two set batters at the crease. The next passage could shape the match.

Australia bowled Bangladesh out of trouble after posting 198, but the hosts reached 62/1 to keep the opening Test alive on day one.

Bangladesh Tour of Australia 2026 Schedule

Bangladesh have reshaped their plans ahead of the Bangladesh vs Australia Test, making five changes to the squad for the opening match in Darwin. The biggest talking point is the return of Soumya Sarkar, who is back in the Test setup after spending five years on the sidelines.

The left-hander last appeared in the format during the 2021 series against the West Indies, where he failed to leave an impression. Since then, he has rebuilt his red-ball numbers in domestic cricket, averaging 44.47 with three centuries across 27 first-class matches. That form has convinced selectors to hand him another opportunity despite his recent struggles in one-day cricket.

The Bangladesh Test squad also welcomes wicketkeeper Jaker Ali and uncapped fast bowler Musfik Hasan. Vice-captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and experienced seamer Taskin Ahmed return after missing the Zimbabwe Test through workload management.

Several enforced changes shaped the final selection. Injuries ruled out Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam and Litton Das, leaving Bangladesh with little room for continuity. Those absences remove three players who featured prominently during the memorable Test series victory over Pakistan earlier this year.

Not everyone kept their place. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been dropped after another disappointing outing against Zimbabwe, where he managed only 2 and 22. Reserve wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam, batter Towhid Hridoy, spinner Nayeem Hasan and uncapped pacer Robiul Haque have also missed selection.

One decision has already sparked discussion. Jaker Ali has returned despite playing only one first-class match since his previous Test appearance against Sri Lanka. He did, however, strengthen his case with two half-centuries for Bangladesh A against Zimbabwe A.

The Bangladesh Test squad will travel to Darwin on July 31 before playing a warm-up fixture ahead of the first Bangladesh vs Australia Test, which begins on August 13. With experienced names returning, fresh faces earning opportunities and several regulars unavailable, Bangladesh have chosen a different path for one of their toughest assignments of the year.

Bangladesh announce five squad changes for the first Australia Test, with Soumya Sarkar returning and fresh selection calls sparking debate.

Bangladesh Test Squad Sees Five Changes Before Australia Clash

Australia are set to welcome Bangladesh for a highly anticipated two-match Test series next month, with both sides entering the contest carrying very different ambitions. The hosts return close to full strength as Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon rejoin the squad, while Bangladesh arrive hoping to produce one of the biggest upsets in their Test history.

In this article, we take a look at the Australia vs Bangladesh schedule, confirmed squads, head-to-head record, and the biggest storylines to follow during the Bangladesh tour of Australia 2026.

Australia vs Bangladesh Series Key Storylines

Several individual contests could define the outcome of the Australia vs Bangladesh Test series 2026.

Steve Smith will once again be Australia's batting leader, but Bangladesh's experienced spinner Taijul Islam will look to slow him down whenever conditions begin to assist spin.

Jake Weatherald faces his biggest challenge since returning to the Test side. Taskin Ahmed's pace with the new ball could test the Australian opener from the very first session.

Another fascinating battle will see Najmul Hossain Shanto attempt to withstand Pat Cummins, whose relentless accuracy has troubled the world's best batters for years.

Australia also holds a commanding advantage in the historical rivalry, winning four of the last five Tests between the two nations. Bangladesh's memorable victory in Mirpur back in 2017 remains their lone success against the Australians in Test cricket.
