Bangladesh Test Squad Sees Five Changes Before Australia Clash

Bangladesh have reshaped their plans ahead of the Bangladesh vs Australia Test, making five changes to the squad for the opening match in Darwin. The biggest talking point is the return of Soumya Sarkar, who is back in the Test setup after spending five years on the sidelines.

The left-hander last appeared in the format during the 2021 series against the West Indies, where he failed to leave an impression. Since then, he has rebuilt his red-ball numbers in domestic cricket, averaging 44.47 with three centuries across 27 first-class matches. That form has convinced selectors to hand him another opportunity despite his recent struggles in one-day cricket.

The Bangladesh Test squad also welcomes wicketkeeper Jaker Ali and uncapped fast bowler Musfik Hasan. Vice-captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and experienced seamer Taskin Ahmed return after missing the Zimbabwe Test through workload management.

Several enforced changes shaped the final selection. Injuries ruled out Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam and Litton Das, leaving Bangladesh with little room for continuity. Those absences remove three players who featured prominently during the memorable Test series victory over Pakistan earlier this year.

Not everyone kept their place. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been dropped after another disappointing outing against Zimbabwe, where he managed only 2 and 22. Reserve wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam, batter Towhid Hridoy, spinner Nayeem Hasan and uncapped pacer Robiul Haque have also missed selection.

One decision has already sparked discussion. Jaker Ali has returned despite playing only one first-class match since his previous Test appearance against Sri Lanka. He did, however, strengthen his case with two half-centuries for Bangladesh A against Zimbabwe A.

The Bangladesh Test squad will travel to Darwin on July 31 before playing a warm-up fixture ahead of the first Bangladesh vs Australia Test, which begins on August 13. With experienced names returning, fresh faces earning opportunities and several regulars unavailable, Bangladesh have chosen a different path for one of their toughest assignments of the year.
