Zimbabwe Scored 170/6 in 1st T20 Against Bangladesh
BULAWAYO: In Zim vs Ban 1st t20, Zimbabwe scored 170 for 6 in 20 overs at the Queens Sports Club on Wednesday. Despite a fiery four-wicket haul from Bangladeshi speedster Nahid Rana, the hosts capitalised on a strong start to set up a challenging 171-run target.
Opting to field first under stand-in skipper Towhid Hridoy, Bangladesh’s new-look bowling attack initially struggled to find their rhythm against Zimbabwe’s aggressive openers. Brian Bennett led the early onslaught, anchoring the Powerplay with a fluent 44 off 30 deliveries. Bennett looked in sublime touch, piercing the infield with ease to smash six boundaries and a maximum.
Alongside Dion Myers, who contributed 20, Bennett laid a solid foundation in powerplay that allowed the hosts to dictate the early tempo of the match. However, the introduction of Nahid Rana completely altered the dynamic of the innings. The extra pace and bounce generated by the young quick rattled Zimbabwe's top order.
Rana broke the threatening opening stand and quickly followed it up by removing the dangerous Sikandar Raza for 20, just as the Zimbabwean captain looked ready to launch into his signature big-hitting sequence.
Rana’s relentless hard lengths restricted the scoring rates and regularly broke blossoming partnerships, finishing with stellar figures of 4 for 26 in his four overs. Despite the regular breakthroughs, Zimbabwe’s middle order refused to buckle. Ryan Burl assumed the role of the innings sheet-anchor, playing a mature, calculated knock under pressure.
Burl accumulated runs smartly and finished unbeaten on 30 off 25 balls, ensuring the hosts did not waste the platform built by the openers. He found a reliable ally in Mohammad Saifuddin at the other end, though Saifuddin proved expensive, conceding 35 runs for his two wickets.
The final flourish came courtesy of Brad Evans, who provided the late-innings fireworks the Bulawayo crowd was desperately craving. Evans smashed a blistering 19 runs off just 10 balls in the death overs, swinging the momentum decisively back in Zimbabwe's favour. His cameo ensured that veteran pacer Taskin Ahmed’s highly economical spell of 0 for 22 from four overs was somewhat neutralized in the aggregate total.
With a target of 8.55 runs per over required for victory, the pressure will be squarely on the young Bangladeshi batting lineup to navigate a pumped-up Zimbabwean bowling attack.
