Williams Sisters Fall in Opener: Serena and Venus Bow Out in Dramatic US Open 2026 Return

NEW YORK: The Williams sisters’ return to the US Open doubles competition ended in defeat on Friday, as Maya Joint and Chan Hao-ching survived a three-set battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Joint and Chan secured a 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(10-7) victory after more than three hours, holding their nerve in the deciding super tie-break to eliminate Serena and Venus Williams from the tournament.

The result came four years after the sisters last played together at the US Open 2026. Despite the loss, the occasion attracted 23,000 spectators, who gave the American pair a strong reception for their first appearance together at the tournament since 2022.

The match also brought together a remarkable collection of Grand Slam and Olympic success. Serena and Venus have combined for 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including two US Open championships, and three Olympic gold medals. Their singles careers have produced another 30 Grand Slam titles.

The Williams Sisters' fall in the opener came after they had fought their way back into the contest. Joint and Chan took control early by claiming the first set, but the Americans forced the match into a decider by winning the second-set tie-break 8-6.

The final-set super tie-break remained closely contested before Joint and Chan finished the match 10-7.

Joint, who said Serena and Venus were among her childhood idols, described the experience of facing them as particularly significant. The Australian also said growing up in Michigan had shaped her admiration for the sisters.

"Being able to play against such legends of the game is super special," said Joint on court.

"I'm lost for words to think of it. She's my idol, both of them. I grew up in Michigan so I always looked up to them. Being able to play them twice is amazing."

Serena, 44, arrived for the match in a customised bomber jacket featuring patches celebrating her US Open singles and doubles titles. Venus, 46, carried a matching pink bag as the sisters walked onto court for their latest appearance together.
