Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes the Youngest International Debutant For India

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes the Youngest International Debutant For India

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi becomes the youngest International debutant for India after receiving his maiden cap in the second T20I against England at Old Trafford Cricket Ground on Saturday. At 15 years and 99 days, the left-handed opener rewrote India's record books, becoming the youngest cricketer to play international cricket for India.

The landmark places Sooryavanshi ahead of Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days old when he began his international career in 1989. He also became India's youngest men's T20I player, moving past the previous mark held by Washington Sundar, who debuted at 18 years and 80 days.

Reward for Rapid Rise

The selection reflects Sooryavanshi's swift rise through domestic and franchise cricket. After being named in India's squad for the T20I series against Ireland men's cricket team earlier this year without making an appearance, he earned his opportunity against England after the series opener was washed out.

His promotion follows an outstanding Indian Premier League campaign, where he finished as the competition's highest run-scorer. The teenager also collected multiple individual honours, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes awards after scoring at a strike rate of 237.30.

Captain Backs Teenager

India captain Shreyas Iyer said Sooryavanshi's performances had justified his selection.

"You've seen him in the past couple of months. How he takes on bowlers shows his confidence. No pressure to play him. He deserves the spot.

"He doesn't take pressure at all. He's unflinching, good to have him around. He's aware of what'll come in these matches.

"He's got a calm demeanour, the way he bats in the nets shows what sort of character he is. The competition for spots is high, game after game, with the talent India has provided in the last two years."

Record Extends Beyond India

While Vaibhav Sooryavanshi now holds the record as the youngest player to represent India in international cricket and the youngest debutant for a Full Member nation in men's T20Is, the overall global record remains with Marian Gherasim of Romania national cricket team, who made his debut at 14 years and 16 days in 2020.
