Tyler Fletcher to Replace Billy Gilmour in Scotland Squad After Injury
Scotland have finalized a change to their World Cup roster ahead of Monday's registration deadline, with Tyler Fletcher called up to the World Cup squad following an injury to midfielder Billy Gilmour.
The 19-year-old Manchester United prospect becomes the latest addition to Steve Clarke’s travelling group after making his senior international debut in Scotland’s recent win over Curacao. Fletcher had joined the national team camp as a standby option and impressed coaching staff during preparations for the tournament.
The squad adjustment comes after Gilmour sustained a knee injury during the Curacao fixture, ending his hopes of participating in the World Cup. The Napoli midfielder had featured prominently throughout Scotland’s qualification campaign and was expected to play a central role in Clarke’s midfield plans.
The decision means Tyler Fletcher to replace Billy Gilmour in Scotland’s final squad for the tournament in North America. Fletcher, the son of former Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher and twin brother of Jack Fletcher, is regarded as one of the country's most promising young talents.
Scotland had been assessing several backup midfield options before confirming the change. Clarke indicated that Fletcher's recent involvement with the senior squad and his performances in training helped move him ahead of other contenders.
"I've got Connor Barron, Andy Irving, Lennon Miller, and you see for yourself how good young Tyler is," Clarke said.
"The three that I mentioned are on standby. Obviously, Tyler joined us this week. He's trained well this week, so he's a little bit closer than the other three, but I'd need to have a big discussion with my staff and decide the best way to go."
The Scotland camp also welcomed the promotion through a statement following confirmation of Gilmour’s absence.
“Following the news of Billy Gilmour's injury the team confirms 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher has been added to our World Cup squad after making his debut against Curacao yesterday.
“Welcome aboard, Tyler.”
Scotland will now head into the World Cup with Fletcher included in the midfield group as preparations continue for their opening fixture.
