MADRID: Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a muscle injury, ruling him out of the upcoming Champions League quarter-finals against Bayern Munich.
The club confirmed the setback after medical tests revealed a problem in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. In a statement, Madrid said: “Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by Real Madrid's medical staff, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His condition is being monitored.”
Courtois had already shown signs of discomfort during the recent European fixture against Manchester City, where he was forced off at half-time. The issue has now been confirmed as more serious, adding to the club’s list of injury concerns.
Madrid progressed to the last eight after securing a 2-1 win in the second leg, with Vinicius Junior scoring both goals. The result followed a commanding first-leg performance at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where Federico Valverde netted a hat-trick.
The absence of Courtois comes at a difficult time for Real Madrid, with several first-team players already dealing with fitness issues, including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo and Eder Militão.
Courtois will also miss the upcoming league derby against Atletico Madrid. In his absence, Ukraine international Andriy Lunin is expected to take over goalkeeping duties.
