Last-Over Drama As Sri Lanka Wins Against Hong Kong

The Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong Asia Cup 2025 match in Dubai on Monday was nothing short of drama. What looked like a routine chase for Sri Lanka suddenly turned into a tense finish, before Pathum Nissanka’s steady knock and Wanindu Hasaranga’s late fireworks pulled them through.
Chasing 150, Sri Lanka appeared well on course when they needed just 32 off the last five overs with eight wickets still intact. But in a matter of minutes, the game flipped. Nissanka, batting fluently on 68, was run out after a risky second run at the start of the 16th over. The very next ball saw Kusal Perera trapped lbw while trying a slog sweep.
Sri Lanka faced a late wobble as Charith Asalanka was caught at short third and Kamindu Mendis followed soon after at deep midwicket. It was when the team lost four wickets for just eight runs.
“In that moment, our hearts were in our mouths,” Asalanka admitted after the match. “I’m disappointed with how we started with the ball and also how we lost those wickets in the 16th over, including my own. In T20s these things happen, but we can’t keep repeating them.”
Earlier, Hong Kong had batted with surprising freedom, racing to 38 in the first four overs as Anshy Rath and Zeeshan Ali attacked Sri Lanka’s new-ball bowlers. The pressure even led to a missed DRS chance against veteran Babar Hayat, with replays showing all three reds. Hong Kong eventually posted 149 for 4, thanks to partnerships from Rath and Nizakat Khan.
Asalanka acknowledged that his team’s bowling at the start was below par. “Credit goes to Hong Kong, they batted well and we bowled badly in those first three overs,” he said.
The saving grace for Sri Lanka was Nissanka’s calm approach. The opener steadied the innings with his second consecutive half-century. He was playing the spinners patiently before accelerating as the required run rate climbed above eight per over.
Hasaranga then finished the game with a quick 20 off nine balls, helping Sri Lanka secure the win and avoid a potential upset.
The Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong match shows no team is big or small in T20 cricket. However, the victory keeps Sri Lanka on track for the Super Fours, with their qualification now depending on the outcome of the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match.
