LAHORE: The 2019 champions have appointed Sohail Tanvir as their new PSL 11 bowling coach for the remainder of the tournament, which is scheduled to run until May 3. Tanvir, a member of the Gladiators’ title-winning squad in 2019, is set to officially join the franchise on Tuesday.
He replaced Wahab Riaz, after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) barred Riaz from holding dual roles, citing conflict of interest concerns. Riaz had also served as the mentor for Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, and the PCB clarified that permanent officials cannot simultaneously take up roles in domestic franchise cricket.
Initially, Riaz had received a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the PCB, allowing him to take up the roles of bowling coach and director for the Gladiators. However, after reviewing his commitments, the board revoked the permissions, prompting this coaching change and marking an important Quetta Gladiators update for the ongoing season.
The coaching adjustment comes at a crucial time as the Gladiators sit fifth in the PSL 11 standings with two points from two matches.
The previous edition’s runners-up began their campaign with a 14-run loss to Karachi Kings but bounced back by defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by 60 runs. Their next clash is scheduled against three-time champions Islamabad United at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday.
The Quetta Gladiators squad features:
Saud Shakeel (c), Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq, Hasan Nawaz, Shamyl Hussain, Alzarri Joseph, Rilee Rossouw, Ahmed Daniyal, Jahanzaib Sultan, Jahandad Khan, Khawaja Mohammad Nafay, Khan Zeb, Bismillah Khan, Saqib Khan, Ahsaan Ali, Brett Hampton, Sam Harper, Bevon Jacobs, Ben McDermott, and Tom Curran.
