Smith's Stunning Century Powers Sixers Past Thunder in Thrilling Sydney Derby

One of the most memorable innings in the Big Bash League 2025 26 was played by Steven Smith in a highly-stakes clash at the SCG. His 100 off 42 balls was explosive, making the Sydney Sixers defy the 189/6 of the Sydney Thunder, and retain their hopes of a top-two spot.

A scorching knock by Smith extended the score by Babar Azam, who contributed 47. They collectively made a 141-run partnership in just 12 overs, which served as the ideal foundation for the. Controversy came at the moment of power surge when Smith decided to face every ball himself and broke the record with 32 runs off one over; the highest number in a BBL over.

However, there was drama in the Sixers, and the game became tense after a mid-innings collapse in which they lost 5 wickets for just 28, including Smith’s. However, Lachlan Shaw and Jack Edwards remained calm as they made the difference with 16 balls to spare.

Warner’s Brilliant Century in Vain

The innings of the Thunder were highlighted by David Warner’s incredible 110 off 64 balls, his second century of the season. His efforts were not enough to help Thunder surpass 189, largely due to a lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup.

The knock of Warner was full of aggressive shots with such forceful uppercuts from Mitchell Starc, who had been absent in the BBL for 11 years.

As the game continued, Warner led the batting, steering Thunder to a strong stance. But the middle-order wrestles, and the insufficiency of contributions of other batters end up costing them the match.

Tactical Battle and Turning Points

Although the brilliance of Smith with the bat took centre stage, the match was characterized by critical tactical moments. Allowing Smith to continue through the full power surge was decisive for the Sixers; although they lost five wickets in a short time, their batting strength saw them through.

On the other hand, the great century of Warner was not sufficient to save the innings of Thunder. An unexpected charge by the bowlers of the Sixers, led by Curran, who took three wickets in the last over, thwarted the hopes of the Thunder to defend their total.
