England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is facing a race against time to be fit for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after sustaining a calf injury during domestic cricket. The all-rounder has been ruled out of England’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand women's cricket team as she continues rehabilitation.
Sciver-Brunt picked up the issue while featuring for The Blaze in England’s 50-over competition. The team management has opted to keep her out of immediate international fixtures, with her recovery being monitored ahead of a decision on her participation in the T20I series against New Zealand starting May 21.
In her absence, all-rounder Charlie Dean will lead England in the ODI series. The selectors have also included top-order batter Maia Bouchier as part of the squad adjustments for the three-match contest.
England will use the series as preparation ahead of a busy international schedule, which includes further white-ball matches against India women's cricket team. These fixtures are expected to serve as key match practice for players ahead of the global tournament.
The ICC Women's T20 World Cup, set to begin on June 12, remains the primary focus for England Women. The side had already announced their 15-player squad for the tournament, becoming the first team to do so.
Sciver-Brunt has not featured in international cricket since the ICC Women’s 50-over World Cup held in India last year. Her availability for the T20 event will depend on her progress over the coming weeks.
England’s ODI series against New Zealand will be played across three venues:
The series provides an opportunity for England’s squad players to step into key roles while the team awaits clarity on their captain’s fitness.
