South Africa Women faced a crushing defeat against England Women at Guwahati. They skittled to just 69 runs while batting first in the match. It was one of their lowest totals in ODIs that drew sharp criticism from fans. Now, the South African team has to make a quick comeback against New Zealand at Indore. Their wicketkeeper batter, Sinalo Jafta, is confident that her side can turn things around after getting a hammering from the England team.
"We always knew coming into a tournament like this, games like this happen. Because it's such a long tournament, we just have to accept what has happened. Laura [Wolvaardt] capped it off nicely and said, we don't become a bad batting unit overnight. Obviously, homework was done, and now we're just looking forward to the next one.” said Sinalo Jafta at the press conference.
She is confident that a change in venue can turn the fortunes for the South African. The wicketkeeper also highlighted the importance of moving forward, and focusing on the next challenge that is coming their way.
"We had to leave the town [Guwahati] behind us. When you look and you're coming into Indore, the people have been fantastic. For us, it's like a fresh perspective. We saw the first game they had - it was a high-scoring day. For us, as a batting unit, it's just to knuckle down and bat. Don't think too much about the outcome. Just take it one ball at a time." said Sinola Jafta.
Addressing the collapse South Africa faced against England, Jafta said that her team was in a bit of a hurry. She also highlighted her own dismissal, saying that it purely happened due to the loss of focus. The wicketkeeper is, however, confident that her side can grab the next opportunity against New Zealand by playing smart cricket.
"We were a bit rushed. We weren't really present in that moment. When I went back, I realised I wasn't really present in the delivery I got out. It wasn't a good day, but we won't dwell on it. We've got another opportunity." said Sinola Jafta.
She then highlighted the fact that New Zealand is a strong opponent, and they need to bring their A game to win the next match.
"We know that when it comes to being tactical, they [New Zealand] are probably high up there, so we have to bring in full intensity. Coach has said, 'Leave everything behind. Tomorrow is another opportunity.' A lot of different individuals will put up their hands in tomorrow's game." said Sinola Jafta.
South Africa Women will now face New Zealand Women in the next World Cup match at Indore. They will be looking to correct all the mistakes they made during the England game, as New Zealand is yet another big challenge consisting of many high-profile names.
