As the countdown to the ICC T20 WC 2026 begins, Pakistan’s premier all-rounder Shadab Khan has shared his thoughts on the national team's mindset and preparation. With the mega event set to kick off on 7 February across India and Sri Lanka, the Men in Green are currently fine-tuning their skills in a specialized training camp in Lahore.
This camp serves as the final gateway before they host Australia for a high-octane three-match T20I series.
Fresh off a scenario-based practice session, Shadab addressed the constant spotlight that follows his performances. While he acknowledges the praise that comes with success, he remains unfazed by the noise surrounding his form.
“When you do well, you get praise. I know there’s a lot of criticism directed at me but I focus on my game,” Shadab told reporters.
The all-rounder also touched upon the debate regarding his role in the side. After a brief hiatus from the international scene, he is determined to prove his worth as a dual-threat asset.
“I am a bowler who can also contribute with the bat. There’s been talk that I focus too much on batting, but I balance both aspects of my game,” Shadab explained.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, Shadab highlighted the tactical challenges posed by the venues in Sri Lanka. Known for its unpredictable weather and spin-friendly tracks, he believes the tournament will be a test of grit rather than a high-scoring frenzy.
“Big scores will be difficult to come by,” he predicted, noting that the team is ready to embrace modern cricket strategies. “Modern cricket demands that you adopt new strategies and adapt accordingly.”
The leg-spinner also took a moment to laud the impact of Pakistan's batting anchor, Babar Azam.
“Wherever we play, we aim to play good cricket. Babar Azam is our biggest player. I have seen him grow into the player he is today,” he added.
With Australia scheduled to land in Pakistan on Wednesday, 28 January, the upcoming series at Gaddafi Stadium is seen as the ultimate litmus test. This marks only the second time the Aussies will play a T20I on Pakistani soil since 2022.
“The upcoming series against Australia is the best preparation for the World Cup. Our spinners performed well in the Asia Cup, and I hope they continue to perform in the World Cup as well,” Shadab concluded.
The selection committee has named a balanced 16-member squad led by Salman Ali Agha to take on the visitors.
