KARACHI: England wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings has credited the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for playing a key role in his early development. This reflects on his journey in franchise cricket during an interaction with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Speaking about his introduction to global T20 leagues, Billings said the PSL marked a turning point in his career. “The PSL was the first franchise tournament I ever took part in,” he said, adding that the opportunity helped him gain exposure at a higher level. He also acknowledged Islamabad United for backing him early in his career. “I will always be thankful to Islamabad United for giving me that initial opportunity back in 2016,” he said.
Currently representing RawalPindiz in PSL 11, Billings spoke positively about his time in Pakistan, both on and off the field. “I really love the hospitality here and I enjoy spending time in Pakistan,” he said.
He also pointed to the growing competitiveness of the tournament, highlighting the presence of international players this season. “The quality of the overseas players in the PSL this year is fantastic. Big-name players from all over the world are taking part in the PSL.”
Billings added that franchise tournaments like the PSL have helped him improve his game. “Tournaments like the PSL have given me the opportunity to develop my cricket career and play at a higher level,” he said.
Beyond cricket, Billings noted his efforts to adapt to life in Pakistan. This includes learning basic Urdu to connect better with teammates. “I try to keep a positive attitude and adapt myself to the Pakistani culture. Learning the local language (Urdu) is fun, and it helps strengthen the bond with my teammates.”
He also praised the depth of talent in Pakistan, naming Abdullah Shafique, Saad Masood and Yasir Khan as players to watch from the RawalPindiz setup.
Reflecting on past experiences, Sam Billings recalled winning the PSL title with Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium in 2023. “Winning the PSL trophy with Lahore Qalandars in 2023 at the Gaddafi Stadium is a special memory. Winning a thrilling final against Multan Sultans on our home ground was an unforgettable moment.”
