Saudi Pro League star Cristiano Ronaldo will not play on Monday in Al Riyadh. Reports from Portugal suggest that the decision is not a planned rest. Ronaldo has instead chosen not to play, which has raised concern within the club and across the league.
The narrative has turned into one of the burning issues of Saudi football. Seen as central to the league’s global image, Ronaldo joined Al Nassr at the end of 2022.
Ronaldo is not happy with the management of Al Nassr. He places the blame on decisions made at the top-level and the oversight of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
It had earlier been reported locally that Ronaldo would be rested before a major game against Al Ittihad. That explanation is now being questioned. It has moved from routine rotation to an outright refusal and dramatically changed how the situation is viewed.
This shift has turned a routine match omission into a growing internal dispute.
Ronaldo is also said to be unhappy with what he perceives as uneven backing across PIF-controlled clubs. Al Hilal continues to strengthen aggressively and is reportedly positioned to benefit from Karim Benzema’s situation following his exit from Al Ittihad.
At Al Nassr, reinforcements have been limited. Despite requests for multiple additions during a critical phase of the campaign, the only arrival has been young talent Haydeer Abdulkareem, leaving the squad short while rivals move forward.
These concerns directly affect Saudi Pro League ambitions and Al Nassr’s ability to compete for titles.
Further complicating matters, reports indicate internal instability at the board level. Sporting director Simao Coutinho and CEO Jose Semedo, both Portuguese, have reportedly had their authority restricted, a move that has intensified Ronaldo’s dissatisfaction.
For the club’s marquee figure, the lack of clarity and direction raises serious questions at a decisive point of the season.
What began as a single match absence now carries wider implications. With Cristiano Ronaldo Al Nassr tensions in the spotlight, attention shifts to how the PIF responds, and whether this situation reshapes the league’s competitive balance in the weeks ahead.
