Rob Walter Praises Ben Sears’ Fitness and Dominance Following South Africa T20I Series

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter highlighted fast bowler Ben Sears’ fitness and consistent appearances as a key positive following the five-match T20I series against South Africa that wrapped up the Black Caps’ home summer. Sears finished the series as joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming eight wickets across five matches at an average of 14.50 and an economy rate of 6.44.

"First and foremostly for Searsy to have a sort of lengthened period of time where he's been fully fit and playing consecutive games… so to play an entire series is a win and you know forget about the performance side of things," Walter said during the post-series press conference.

Sears’ pace and bounce have previously been curtailed by injuries. He missed the 2025 Champions Trophy with a hamstring tear and later suffered another while playing in the MLC 2025 for Washington Freedom. His return to competitive cricket included a stint in Victoria Premier cricket and appearances for the Wellington Firebirds in the Super Smash, which helped him regain full match fitness.

During the series, Sears also benefited from guidance from senior pacer Lockie Ferguson, discussing optimal lengths and field placements. With Ferguson unavailable to spend time with his newborn son, Sears took on a leading role, finishing with figures of 1 for 22 in Wellington and 2 for 37 in Christchurch.

Although New Zealand lost the series from a 2-1 lead, Walter emphasised the value of exposing emerging players to high-pressure situations in the absence of senior squad members participating in the IPL and PSL. "There's never any bad experience right? As long as we put it in context… you really find out about yourself and where your game is," he said.

The Black Caps will next tour Bangladesh in April for three ODIs and an equal number of T20Is, giving fringe players further opportunities to adapt to international conditions. Walter also noted that NZ A will visit Sri Lanka, providing additional experience in subcontinental conditions.

Sears’ ability to stay fit and maintain performance across consecutive matches is seen as a key takeaway for New Zealand cricket ahead of these upcoming tours.
