LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi ended their nine-year trophy drought in spectacular fashion, clinching their second title with a five-wicket victory over the Hyderabad Kingsmen in a pulse-pounding HBL PSL 2026 final at the Gaddafi Stadium.
In a match that swung like a pendulum, Zalmi’s middle-order resilience overcame a historic opening burst from the Kingsmen's pace attack to chase down a 130-run target. The evening began with Babar Azam winning a crucial toss and electing to bowl, a decision that bore fruit as his bowlers dismantled the Hyderabad lineup.
Despite a fighting 54 off 50 balls from the Kingsmen’s star opener Saim Ayub, the debutant franchise struggled against the relentless accuracy of Aaron Hardie. The Australian all-rounder produced a masterclass in seam bowling, finishing with clinical figures of 4 for 27. Hardie’s middle-over strikes triggered a collapse from which Hyderabad never truly recovered, as they were eventually bundled out for 129 in 18 overs.
What seemed like a straightforward chase turned into a nightmare for Peshawar Zalmi in the opening exchanges. The capacity crowd was stunned into silence on the very first ball of the innings when Babar Azam was dismissed for a golden duck. The Kingsmen bowlers, sensing blood, unleashed a ferocious spell of pace that left Zalmi reeling at 43/4 after the powerplay. Mohammad Ali was the chief architect of this early carnage, removing Mohammad Haris and Babar Azam in quick succession to finish with figures of 3/38.
However, the tide turned when Aaron Hardie walked out to the middle, joining Abdul Samad for a season-defining partnership. Showing nerves of steel, the duo weathered the initial storm before launching a calculated counter-attack. Hardie followed up his four-wicket haul with a masterful 56* off 39 balls, peppered with nine boundaries. He found a perfect ally in Abdul Samad, who played a vital cameo of 48 off 34 balls, including four sixes that shifted the pressure back onto the Kingsmen.
The pair added 85 runs for the fifth wicket, bringing the target within reach and deflating the Hyderabad spirit. The victory was eventually sealed with 28 balls to spare as Farhan Yousaf struck the winning boundary off Hunain Shah. The Zalmi dugout erupted as players rushed onto the field to celebrate their historic triumph.
At the post-match ceremony, Aaron Hardie was the undisputed choice for Player of the Match for his heroic all-round performance. Despite the loss, the Hyderabad Kingsmen earned widespread respect for their remarkable journey from losing their first four games to reaching the final in their debut season.
Peshawar Zalmi, however, reigned supreme, proving that their top-of-the-table finish in the league stage was no fluke as they lifted the prestigious HBL PSL trophy once again.
