Pakistan Eye Fresh Mix for Sri Lanka T20Is Ahead of World Cup

Pakistan Eye Fresh Mix for Sri Lanka T20Is Ahead of World Cup

Pakistan to name squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka within days as final selection talks wrap up. The series starts on January 7 in Dambulla and comes at a pivotal point in the team’s planning.

Sources indicate the think tank is focused on tightening combinations rather than wholesale change, and still, some names are moving back into the frame.

Shadab’s Return and Pace Questions

Vice-captain Shadab Khan is set to return after missing recent assignments due to injury. His presence offers more than leg-spin, and brings flexibility, calm decision-making, and sharper fielding, areas Pakistan has quietly missed.

Selectors are also reassessing fast bowler Haris Rauf, as he missed the South Africa tour and the recent tri-nation T20 series, but officials are now weighing his fitness and workload. Raw pace remains a key focus, especially with conditions that reward high speed through the air.

Youth Options Enter the Picture

Beyond the established names, emerging opener Maaz Sadaqat is pushing his case. His inclusion would signal intent to test new batting options at the top. Another name gaining ground is fast bowler Ahmed Daniyal, whose raw pace has caught attention during domestic assessments.

At the same time, squad management remains cautious, and several players are currently involved in Big Bash League season 15, and their availability will depend on fitness reports and travel logistics.

World Cup Deadline Adds Pressure

The Sri Lanka series runs on January 7, 9, and 11, all in Dambulla. Coincidentally, January 7 is also the deadline for submitting preliminary squads for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

Teams can adjust squads freely until that date, and any late revisions after that will require approval from ICC.

Drawn in Group A with India, the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia, Pakistan know the India fixture will dominate scrutiny and set the tone for their campaign.
