KARACHI: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has opened discussions with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) regarding a possible Pakistan vs Argentina friendly match, as both sides explore opportunities to expand cooperation beyond a single fixture.
Officials from the two federations held a virtual meeting to review areas of collaboration, including technical development and coaching exchange programmes. The proposed match remains under consideration. Pakistan and Argentina are now assessing feasibility and scheduling options.
Alongside the idea of an international fixture, the talks have centred on strengthening Pakistan’s football setup through structured initiatives. These include the introduction of specialised training programmes and the potential involvement of Argentine coaching staff in development projects.
The engagement follows recent efforts by the PFF, led by president Mohsen Gillani, to increase Pakistan’s exposure at the international level. A fixture against a higher-ranked side such as Argentina national football team is viewed internally as a step towards improving competitive standards.
The discussions were facilitated by Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Argentina after the launch of “AFA Pakistan”, which aims to build closer sporting ties. A meeting chaired by Ambassador Hassan Afzal Khan included senior officials from both federations, with AFA represented by marketing director Francisco Lemmi.
Participants agreed on the need for a structured approach to cooperation, focusing on sustainable growth within Pakistan’s football system. The PFF also highlighted the importance of long-term engagement rather than one-off initiatives.
Officials on both sides indicated that the process is still at an early stage. Further technical evaluations and logistical planning will be required before any agreement on the friendly or broader development programme is finalised.
The proposed fixture, if approved, is expected to be scheduled after the FIFA World Cup 2026.
