Novak Djokovic Sets Sights on Creating History at US Open 2026

After winning the US Open in 2023 and matching Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic has been chasing a historic 25th major trophy.

The wait for that record has continued, but the 39-year-old has still managed to reach several other impressive milestones during his pursuit.

Djokovic is now set to make his 20th appearance at the US Open. Only three other men have reached that number before him, showcasing how special and unique his legacy is in international tennis.

"I'm very proud of that. Obviously longevity was always one of the goals when I was younger, trying to have a long career, trying to have more shots at Grand Slams, and stay healthy long enough so that I can perform for as many years as possible," said Novak Djokovic.

Since matching Court’s record, Djokovic has had 11 opportunities to move ahead of her. During that period, he has reached two Grand Slam finals and six other semi-finals.

Earlier this year, Djokovic beat Sinner in a five-set semi-final at the Australian Open but lost to Alcaraz in the final. He then suffered a third-round defeat at Roland Garros before losing to Sinner in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Djokovic skipped the Montreal Masters and then had a tough start in Cincinnati. After the match, he admitted that the hot and humid conditions had made the physical issues he was dealing with even harder to manage.

"I had two weeks to really train and get my body and mind into the right state, prepared for what's coming up.” added Novak Djokovic.

"So it remains to be seen. If you ask me if I'm prepared, I feel like I am, as best I can be. But it's different training and then getting out on the Arthur Ashe Stadium and playing best-of-five (sets). You don't normally play best-of-five on the practice sessions." added Novak Djokovic.

Speaking about the upcoming match, Djokovic said he is hopeful for a strong start, as that will help him move ahead in the tournament confidently.

"Let's see how it goes. The opening matches are always for me, particularly in the last few years, quite challenging. So hopefully I can overcome the first hurdle and build from there." said Novak Djokovic.
