“My Heart Was Racing”, Confesses Neymar After Making Return For Brazil Following Knee Injury Nightmare
Brazil forward Neymar said he felt both relief and excitement after making his first international appearance in nearly three years during Brazil's 3-0 win over Scotland in Miami.
The 33-year-old came off the bench in the second half at Hard Rock Stadium, marking his return to the national team after a lengthy absence caused by a serious knee problem. The match also represented Neymar's first World Cup-stage involvement since suffering the injury that interrupted a significant period of his international career.
Speaking after the game, Neymar admitted the occasion brought a wave of emotions as he prepared to step back onto the pitch for Brazil.
"My heart was racing, very nervous... but happy! Proud, everything went well," he said.
Return follows lengthy recovery
The latest neymar world cup appearance came almost 1,000 days after his previous outing for Brazil. His last international match was against Uruguay in October 2023, when he sustained a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee.
The setback led to an extended rehabilitation process and raised uncertainty over when he would return to the national setup. After weeks of training and preparation, Neymar was included in Carlo Ancelotti's squad and was introduced during the closing stages against Scotland.
Emotional reaction after final whistle
Television footage showed Neymar in tears after the match. The forward later explained that the reaction reflected the significance of returning to international football after a prolonged spell away from the game.
"I'm very happy to be wearing the national team jersey again after three years. I'm physically well, thank God. It was tough being sidelined for those days, but I wasn't completely inactive. I've been training hard for 25 days to be in good shape for the games. So I'm very happy, very pleased," commented the star.
"It was a mix of emotions when I came on. It was a long time away from this jersey, away from the national team, but thank God everything worked out and I managed to come back."
Family support during recovery
Neymar also credited his family for helping him through the difficult period following the Neymar injury. Several relatives were present in the stands and witnessed his return to international action.
"They know everything I went through, all the struggles I had to be here today, and our goal was to represent the national team, to be playing again. It's very emotional to see them there, thrilled and happy with my return," he said.
The appearance offered a positive sign for Brazil as Neymar continues his comeback following one of the most challenging injury absences of his career.
