The Brazilian star, Neymar, struck twice as Santos FC claimed a 2-1 win over CR Vasco da Gama in the fourth round of the Brasileirao at Urbano Caldeira Stadium, marking his first goals of 2026.
Making only his second full 90-minute appearance since returning from surgery, Neymar looked sharp and purposeful. He broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. The forward doubled the advantage after the break, cutting inside and delivering a clinical strike that ultimately proved decisive in the 2-1 contest
It was his first goal since December 2025. After the final whistle, Neymar did not shy away from addressing the scrutiny surrounding his form and fitness, particularly talk of a possible return to the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup.
“Last week, they said I was the worst player in the world. Today I scored two goals, and that’s what matters,” Neymar said.
“One day you’re no good, or you’re ‘retired’; the next, people say you have to go to the World Cup. I’m dedicating myself and working to get in the best possible shape.”
The match also carried a flashpoint. Neymar exchanged words with Vasco midfielder Thiago Mendes, recalling a previous injury sustained during their time in Paris.
“He always wants to cause trouble and act tough. He already broke me once at PSG, and he threatened me again today. It’s always the same with him,” Neymar remarked.
For Santos, the 2-1 victory injects momentum into their league campaign. For Neymar, it signals that his comeback is gathering pace.
