PSG Edge Past 10-Man Monaco to Secure Champions League Last 16 Spot

PSG Edge Past 10-Man Monaco to Secure Champions League Last 16 Spot

Monaco set the tone early, with French international Maghnes Akliouche giving the hosts a deserved lead by halftime. PSG struggled to break down the Principality side, which had already shown flashes of dominance in last week’s first leg, despite being reduced to 10 men after Aleksandr Golovin’s red card.

PSG Strike Back After Red Card

The turning point came in the 58th minute when Mamadou Coulibaly was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving Monaco a man short. PSG immediately capitalized, scoring from the resulting free-kick. The ball was played short to Doue, whose low cross was converted by Marquinhos to make it 1-1 on the night.

Kvaratskhelia Seals Aggregate Lead

PSG then surged ahead in 66 minutes. Achraf Hakimi unleashed a powerful strike that was parried by goalkeeper Philipp Koehn, only for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to convert the rebound and seemingly secure the aggregate triumph for the defending champions.

Late Monaco Fightback

Despite being a man down, Monaco continued to push. Jordan Teze turned in a deflected Simon Adingra cross in stoppage time to make it 2-2, keeping hopes alive. Wout Faes came close to another late goal, but PSG held on, maintaining their 5-4 aggregate lead to progress to the last 16.

Looking Ahead

Luis Enrique’s PSG will now await Friday's draw to learn their potential opponents, with Barcelona and Chelsea among possible rivals. PSG had already beaten Barcelona 2-1 away in the league and faced Chelsea in last year’s Club World Cup final. With this result, PSG progress in the PSG vs Monaco, Champions League last 16 tie, while Monaco exits the tournament at the play-off stage for the second consecutive season.
