Mirra Andreeva Defeats Sorana Cirstea to Secure French Open Semi-Finals Spot
Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva continued her strong run at Roland Garros 2026 on Tuesday, defeating Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-3 to secure a place in the last four. The victory sends the 19-year-old into her second French Open semi-final and strengthens her position among the leading contenders for the women's title.
The result comes at a time when the draw has opened up considerably following the exits of reigning champion Coco Gauff and four-time winner Iga Swiatek. Andreeva will now face Marta Kostyuk for a place in the final after the Ukrainian advanced from her quarter-final encounter against Elina Svitolina.
Despite the straightforward scoreline, Andreeva approached the match aware of the challenge posed by the experienced Romanian. The pair had spent considerable time practising together during the season, giving both players a clear understanding of each other's game.
"I'm super happy that I was able to play aggressive," Andreeva said after the match.
"The last time I played her, it was a very tough battle. Every practice with her is very tough. We've practised 10 times already this year and we know each other well.
"I knew it wouldn't be easy and I'd have to give 200% of my intensity and focus, as she would look to be aggressive and pressure me whenever she could."
Andreeva quickly established control of the contest and rarely allowed Cirstea opportunities to dictate rallies. The opening set lasted just 24 minutes as the Russian maintained pressure from the baseline and limited her opponent's chances to settle into the match.
Cirstea responded more effectively in the second set and briefly restored parity after recovering a break. However, the Romanian was unable to sustain that momentum. Andreeva regained control in the closing stages, earning another break before sealing victory with a decisive forehand winner.
The win also added another milestone to Andreeva's growing record in Paris. Her latest success marked a 16th main-draw victory at the French Open, the highest total achieved by a teenager at the tournament this century.
Looking ahead to the semi-finals, Andreeva remained focused on the challenge to come.
"Obviously, there are no easy opponents, especially when you're going to be playing the semi-finals of a Grand Slam," Andreeva said.
"I think we're just going to try to prepare my best. I'm just going to try to do everything I can on the court, fight, and we'll see. The better player will win."
