Marta Kostyuk Defeated Iga Swiatek in Shocking French Open 2026 Masterclass
Marta Kostyuk defeated Iga Swiatek to book a place in the French Open 2026 quarter-finals, ending the four-time champion's campaign with a straight-sets victory on Court Philippe Chatrier on Sunday.
The Ukrainian produced one of the standout results of the tournament, overcoming the former world No. 1 7-5, 6-1 to continue her impressive clay-court season. The result also means Iga Swiatek knocked out in French Open, bringing an early end to a tournament she had dominated in recent years.
Kostyuk entered Roland Garros carrying strong momentum after title-winning runs in Madrid and Rouen. She extended her unbeaten streak on clay to 15 matches and delivered a composed performance against one of the most successful players in the tournament's history.
"I'm still in shock to beat such an unbelievable player who won four times here," said Kostyuk.
"I feel like I've given myself more space to just create something, to challenge my opponents. I woke up in the morning and all I thought was 'what an unbelievable day I have to live today... there's nothing I could do other than this'."
The opening set remained evenly balanced for long periods, with neither player able to establish control. However, a series of errors from Swiatek at key moments allowed Kostyuk to edge ahead and take the set after more than an hour of play.
From that point, the match shifted decisively in the Ukrainian's favour. Kostyuk increased the intensity of her baseline game and consistently pressured Swiatek's serve, preventing the Polish star from mounting a comeback.
The defeat marks another difficult chapter in Swiatek's recent clay-court record. Despite her reputation as the dominant force on the surface and four French Open titles, she has not won a tournament since lifting the trophy in Paris in 2024.
For Kostyuk, the victory represents a significant milestone. Before this match, she had never managed to take a set from Swiatek in their previous tour-level meetings. She now advances to her first French Open quarter-final after recording the biggest Grand Slam win of her career.
