France captain Kylian Mbappe finished the tournament as its leading scorer, ensuring Mbappe won 2nd Golden Boot after the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in Sunday's final in East Rutherford. The award capped another prolific World Cup campaign for the Real Madrid forward, who registered 10 goals and three assists in six appearances.

The Golden Boot 2026 race remained open until the final as Lionel Messi entered the title match with a chance to overtake Mbappe. Argentina, however, struggled to create opportunities against Spain's defence, and Messi failed to add to his tally after going scoreless for a third consecutive match. With no change to the scoring charts, Mbappe remained at the top and secured the tournament's highest individual scoring honour.

Historic Milestone for Mbappe

The latest achievement means Mbappe won Golden Boot 2026, becoming the first footballer to claim the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot on two occasions. He previously earned the award after finishing as the top scorer at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

His 10-goal haul also placed him among the most productive attackers in World Cup history. Eight of those goals came through four separate braces against Iraq, Senegal, Sweden and England, making him the first player since Gerd Müller in 1970 to reach double figures in a single men's World Cup.

World Cup Scoring Record Extended

Although France were beaten by England in the third-place playoff, Mbappe scored twice in that match to strengthen his position in the Golden Boot standings before the final was played. Those goals also took his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals in 22 matches.

The 27-year-old moved ahead of Messi during the tournament to become the leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history. Messi ended the competition with 21 World Cup goals after Argentina's defeat in the final, with the 39-year-old potentially making his last appearance on football's biggest stage.

While France fell short of another World Cup title, Mbappe left the tournament with the competition's top individual scoring honour and another landmark achievement in international football.
