Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has indicated he could consider stepping away from Formula One at the end of the season.
The Red Bull Racing driver has struggled under the new technical regulations. These regulations were introduced this season and he admitted that he is no longer enjoying the current direction of the sport. Verstappen said the changes, particularly the new power unit balance, have made driving less enjoyable and raised questions about his long-term future in the championship.
“You just think about, is it worth it?” he said. “Or do I enjoy being more at home with my family? Seeing my friends more when you’re not enjoying your sport?”
Verstappen had already described his car as “undriveable” after qualifying outside the top ten in Japan. The race result ended his dominant run at Suzuka, where he had won repeatedly in recent seasons.
He has been openly critical of the current regulations, which include a 50-50 split between conventional engine power and electrical energy. Verstappen believes the changes have made the cars less enjoyable to drive and said the situation is not sustainable for the team unless performance improves.
“It’s really anti-driving. Then at one point, yeah, it’s just not what I want to do,” he said. “And of course, you can look at it and make a lot of money. Great. But at the end of the day, it’s not about money any more because this has always been my passion.”
Verstappen currently sits ninth in the Formula One championship standings, trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team after three races. His season has included a sixth-place finish in Australia and a retirement in China due to a cooling issue.
The upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled, so Verstappen will return to racing at the Miami Grand Prix in May. During the break, he plans to continue racing in other events. He also aims to work with the team to improve performance and balance.
“I want to be here to have fun and have a great time and enjoy myself. At the moment that’s not really the case,” he said.
