Josh Hazlewood is gearing up for the upcoming Ashes series, and he wants more all-rounders in the squad to challenge the batting-heavy lineup of England. After performing strongly against India in the first two games of the T20I series, Hazlewood is now turning his attention to Sheffield Shield cricket. The bowler is confident that he can regain his red ball form by playing against Victoria in the Shield cricket, which will be his last game before the first Ashes test in Perth.
When asked about the importance of all-rounders, Josh Hazlewood said that he supports the inclusion of those players who can provide balance to the team in both batting and bowling. This statement underlines the fact that Australia can pick either Cameron Green or Beau Webster for the first Ashes test, as their inclusion would give the Aussies more flexibility in bowling.
"First player picked [should be] an all-rounder, I think. Going back to those 20-odd Test matches we played with no all-rounder, they were hard yards. So if [they] can be in the team, be it bowling, [Ca Green] Greeny is obviously an outstanding player, and Beau has done great for us whenever he's played. The more the merrier, I say. They can bowl as much as they want," said Josh Hazlewood at the post-match press conference.
Speaking about his own preparation, he said things are currently moving in the right direction. Due to this, he is confident to play a major part in the Ashes series, though the final call will be made keeping in view his fitness.
"Everything's going swimmingly now. I think I can't really say if it's worked perfectly until probably after the summer. If I get through everything, it's probably the template moving forward, to put myself in the best position to play as many games as possible. Still resting the odd one here and there, if it doesn't sort of match up with travel or turnarounds and stuff like that," said Josh Hazlewood.
After performing brilliantly against India in the 2nd T20I at the MCG, Josh Hazlewood will now return to home to get some rest. He is looking forward to featuring in the Shield game against Victoria that will start on Monday.
"The next week, I'll just probably get in the gym a couple of times. Don't really need to bowl a hell of a lot, probably later in the week with the Shield game starting Monday week at home. So it will be a little bit of a de-load the next few days, and then go again. So things are good," said Josh Hazlewood.
The upcoming Ashes series will be a tough test for England as well as Australia. The home team is currently battling with various fitness concerns, as Pat Cummins has been ruled out recently from the first Ashes test at Perth. In this situation, Australia will rely on Hazlewood in the bowling department, so his availability is considered vital for the home team.
