Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese coach expected to sign a two-year deal with the club.
Mourinho enjoyed an unbeaten league campaign with Benfica in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this season, but his side still fell short of winning the title.
During his previous spell at Real Madrid, he lifted LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana across three seasons. He is currently tied to Benfica until June 2027 and has also mentioned that the club has offered him a contract extension.
In his career so far, Jose Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. He has also won the Champions League twice.
Other names like Jurgen Klopp, Didier Deschamps and Mauricio Pochettino were also linked with the job to replace Alvaro Arbeloa. However, club president Florentino Perez feels Mourinho is the right choice to guide Real Madrid through their current tough period.
Arbeloa was handed the job in January after Xabi Alonso left Real Madrid by mutual consent, just a day after a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.
Since taking charge, Arbeloa has struggled to earn the players’ trust. Reports of a clash between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni have also raised doubts about his ability to manage the dressing room.
Following Real Madrid’s heavy loss to Barcelona in El Clasico, club president Florentino Perez decided to speed up the plan to change manager, and the club has now reached an agreement.
It would be interesting to see how Mourinho’s new stint will shape up for Real Madrid, as their recent season didn’t provide strong results. Besides coaching, there are some other issues that Los Blancos need to sort out fast, as their rivals Barcelona are also looking to bring some changes in their squad for the next season.
