ICC Suspends Canada’s Membership Amid Serious Governance and Corruption Allegations

ICC Suspends Canada’s Membership Amid Serious Governance and Corruption Allegations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken disciplinary action against Cricket Canada, with the decision meaning ICC suspends Canada's membership with immediate effect following concerns over governance and compliance issues within the country's cricket administration.

The move was approved during an ICC Board meeting in Ahmedabad, where officials also outlined a roadmap that Cricket Canada must follow to regain its standing as an associate member. While the suspension affects the board's membership status, Canadian national teams will continue to participate in ICC tournaments, and player development funding will remain in place under ICC supervision.

The latest action comes weeks after investigations linked to corruption allegations on Canada cricket administration drew international attention. The ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit has been examining claims relating to governance practices and decision-making within Cricket Canada.

According to the ICC, the suspension is tied to breaches of membership obligations rather than on-field matters. The organisation has been instructed to implement a series of governance reforms, with progress to be reviewed by the ICC's Normalisation Committee before any reinstatement is considered.

Questions surrounding Cricket Canada's administration have intensified over the past year. Allegations raised in a Canadian investigative documentary led to renewed scrutiny of the board's operations, including claims involving team selection processes and concerns over transparency within the organisation.

Former coaches Khurram Chohan and Pubudu Dassanayake were among those who publicly voiced concerns regarding player selection matters. Their allegations added to broader discussions around accountability and oversight within Canadian cricket.

Administrative instability has also contributed to the situation. Cricket Canada has undergone leadership changes in recent months, with Arvinder Khosa taking over as board president. The organisation had previously faced scrutiny over the appointment of former chief executive Salman Khan, whose tenure became the subject of separate controversy.

The ICC said Cricket Canada will remain under close monitoring while it works toward meeting the conditions required to restore its membership status.
