Hobart Hurricanes defeated Perth Scorchers by 4 wickets in a nail-biting BBL match. They chased a tricky target of 151 runs, courtesy of some breathtaking hitting by Tim David in the second innings. He scored a crucial 42 runs in a stiff chase, giving Hurricanes a well-deserved victory in the Boxing Day BBL clash.
Batting first, Perth Scorchers had a steady start as they kept the wickets in hand after losing Mitchell Marsh early in the Powerplay. Their destructive Kiwi opener, Finn Allen, played positively in the first innings, providing the Scorchers with a solid platform in the first ten overs.
However, after the dismissal of Finn Allen, the Perth Scorchers lost their way. The incoming batters couldn’t accelerate the scoring and lost their wickets quickly due to some smart bowling by the Hobart Hurricanes side. As a result, all the hard work done by Finn Allen at the top went in vain, giving the Hurricanes the upper hand in the match.
The rising Bangladeshi leg-spinner, Rishad Hossain, was the key performer in the Hurricanes’ bowling attack. He dismantled the Scorchers’ middle order with smart bowling, as his googlies proved nearly unplayable for their batters. As a result, Rishad Hossain picked up three wickets in the first innings while conceding just 33 runs.
When Hobart Hurricanes came out to bat, they looked confident to chase the target of 151 runs quickly. However, an aggressive bowling spell by Joel Paris and Cooper Connolly disrupted their entire plans. The duo removed the top order of the Hurricanes side quickly, making the entire contest quite interesting.
Scorchers kept up the pressure by taking more wickets in the middle overs, however, the arrival of Tim David at the crease made things difficult for them. The explosive David showcased why he is a top striker in world cricket currently. He took on the Scorcher bowlers positively without playing with the fear of failure. As a result, Hurricanes kept up with the required run rate and carried the chase deep into the innings.
Tim David looked well set to finish the match with his powerful hitting; however, he suffered a sudden hamstring injury while running between the wickets. As a result, he left the field immediately after scoring a match-winning 42 runs off just 28 balls. The late push given by him proved vital for the Hobart Hurricanes, as they sealed the chase in the last over when Nathan Ellis hit the winning runs.
It was a well-fought victory for the Hurricanes, as they stayed in the match despite being put under pressure by the Scorchers multiple times in the second innings. This Boxing Day BBL victory would have given them a lot of confidence, as they came from behind in the match to defeat the Perth Scorchers by 4 wickets.
